O E U C A L I P T O - U M S É C U L O N O B R A S I L 22 In 1939 was printed of the first handbook on the production of seedlings, cultivation, and handling of the eucalypts, including details on the time for cutting: eucalypt trees with 12 to 15 years of age are adequate for railway beams, those with 20 years of age are ideal for posts, but when the agglomerate board industries were implemented, and when finally in 1997, Duratex introduced the first “MDF” - ‘Medium Density Fiberboard,’ the eucalypt started to be used earlier, at six years of age, and there were no more limitations for the expansion of its cultivation. From then, eucalypt products, initially used in the South in the structure of upholstered furniture, started to be used for manufacturing kitchen furniture, in the automotive industry, and in other noble uses. The export of eucalypt planks started, after the drying and sawing technology allowed lumber to be opened without cracking. A pioneer experience of Navarro de Andrade was restarted a half a century later, when companies “Champion,” “Suzano,” and “Melhoramentos” developed technology for the production of pulp with the shorter fiber of the eucalypts, while “Duratex” and others invested in the production of more sophisticated materials, the “HDF” - ‘High Density Fiberboard’, resulting in flooring and wood panels, widely used today. In Brazil with the increasing awareness about the risks for native forests due to the destruction of the Atlantic Forest, a fiscal incentives system was put in place in 1965 for the cultivation of forests. It was still early, there were no adequate seeds, and handling had to be improved. On the contrary of what occurs today, with “minimum cultivation,” the soil was cleaned, and plowed before planting, and many planters just simply planted the trees and forgot them denying any of the necessary care steps necessary during the first year, mainly, in the control of ants, termites, diseases and fires. The result was that there were many unsucessfulness, and for this reason, the research institutions and universities created areas dedicated to the study of silviculture, to solve problems that became evident with the improvised incentive plan for the planting of forests. The first courses of Forest Engineering were opened in the Universidade Federal de Viçosa, Universidade Federal do Paraná and Universidade de São Paulo. Today, there are 40 courses in Brazil, developing a large part of their research jointly with the industry. Due to this, Brazil has large corporations manufacturing fiberboards and panels from the eucalypt, pulp and paper from the eucalypts, and industries producing steel using eucalypts charcoal, that is, planted forests, without exerting pressure on native forests. The main integration agents are the Instituto de Pesquisas e Estudos Florestais – IPEF, the Sociedade de Investigações Florestais – SIF, the Fundação de Pesquisa Florestal do Paraná - FUPEF, besides other smaller institutions. The line of research is not the same as in the past; researchers currently seek larger yields, sustainability, and the integration of the planted forest with the native forest, assuming the study of the eucalypt understory. These studies show the eucalypt forests as an extremely lively area, in which there are over 300 species of birds (research in the Duratex forests) that use the eucalypt as a source of food, shelter, or reproduction, an important wildlife of reptiles, among which, a large of lizards and of frogs, an abundance of rodents, and, as in all nourishment chains, birds of prey and carnivores, that feed on smaller species. In an extreme case, a threatened species of only hummingbird survives in the eucalypt trees, and five other species of birds are preserved in land of corporations that plant forests. The planted forest perfectly replaced the native forest, including when the most sought biodiversity is considered.
