Already growing in Rio Grande do Sul since the late 19 th century, from seedlings that
had been introduced in Chile, the tree was also well-known in Rio de Janeiro, where
two seedlings originating from Portugal had been planted in 1824.
It took but three years for Navarro to realize eucalypt would win the competition, so
much so that in 1906 he planted several species of the genus in another nursery, in
Campinas, to perfect his evaluation.
The first experiment was concluded in 1908 and the agronomist officially informed the
“Paulista” board that eucalypt was the tree of choice. It was in that year, therefore, that
tree’s commercial planting commenced in Brazil and it only wasn’t the country’s first
planted forest because Rio Grande do Sul farmers already planted acácia-negra ‘Acacia
mearnsi,’ although for other purposes, such as producing tannin for the leather tannery
industry.
The railway then purchased a 2,400-hectares area in Rio Claro, where Navarro installed
another nursery, still in operation and now the headquarters of the Forest Service. Criticism
surfaced immediately: the eucalypt plantation looked like a ‘broomstick’ forest,
eucalypt firewood wasn’t good to generate heat, it generated toxic smoke that would kill
train workers and the ash clogged furnace grits.
