Professor Jacques Vielliard, who located the extremely rare hummingbird. 26 Eucalypt does not dry the land out, nor is it a major water consumer, since, as its roots only go down about 2.5 meters and do not reach the water table, fully grown trees “drink” 15 liters of water per day in summertime and three to four in the winter months, much less than native woods such as cedar ‘Cedrella fissilis’ and has the same consumption as jacaranda ‘Jacaranda cuspidifolia’. It is false to accuse eucalypt of forming “green deserts,” since among birds alone, 300 species feed, reproduce and nest in eucalypt plantations, according to biologists who undertook independent studies in major eucalypt plantations in Bahia, Espírito Santo, and São Paulo. Eucalypt is so important for a few species that they have delimited “territories” in the eucalypt plantations and defend them against other birds of their main species. There is at least one species of hummingbirds in Espírito Santo that only survives in the reserve of a major eucalypt producer, as informed by Unicamp professor Jacques Vielliard, who studied the ‘Ramphodon dohrnii’ in the field and was hired by Duratex to carry out a census of the birds that live within and in the neighboring area of the eucalypt plantation.
