O fogão a lenha ainda consome imensas quantidades de madeira. Wood-burning stoves still burn immense quantities of lumber. Brazil, the only country in the world whose name derives from a tree, offered lumber as its first product, which was exploited to exhaustion by the Portuguese and French, the paubrasil ‘Caesalpina echinata’. The demand in Europe for lumber was so great that in 1531, the fleet of Martim Afonso de Sousa was stalled in Rio de Janeiro for three months, so that Portuguese carpenters could harvest native trees to build two more ships that were use, of course, to carry more wood to Portugal. There are ships most probably had their hulls made with peroba ‘Aspidosperma cylindrocarpon’ and grapiapunha ‘Apuleia leiocarpa’, which are appropriate for the naval construction. The exploitation of the forest was so destructive that in 1810, British traveler William Henry May reports that it was necessary to cut “over 300 medium-sized trees,” on the hills of São Sebastião, to open a trail to transport a “tree with some 10 feet in diameter” bought by the consul, down to the sea. The consul, Sir James Gambier, had assembled an expedition to identify trees that could be useful to the British naval industry. The log was so heavy that it caused “considerable listing of the ship,” the ‘Fanny’. After the pau-brasil ‘Caesalpina echinata’, international pressure turned to the pine trees ‘Araucaria angustifolia’ destroying the forests of the only Brazilian native coniferous tree, the araucária, which was so common that the Capital of São Paulo baptized a whole district as ‘of the Pinheiros,’ and in the interior, there is a city named “São Carlos dos Pinhais”, which is currently battling to replant the disappeared coniferous. Other cities in Paraná also have the names of “Pinhais” and “São José dos Pinhais”.
