Received at the Sidney Botanical Gardens, he was given, by Joseph Henry Maiden, seeds of 150 different species of ‘Eucalyptus’, a collection from which many Brazilian eucalypts plantations derive yet today. The railway problem lessened as years went by, when electrification came around, a fact which, curiously, led the Companhia Paulista to sell eucalypt as posts for the power network. And once again the scientist undertook technical research and proved a 15year-old ‘E. tereticornis’ was more resistant and had better diameter measurements than a native, 150-year-old guarantã. Another remark came about, however. Navarro de Andrade discovered in 1920, that only eucalypt planted successfully encouraged by “Belgo-Mineira” in João Monlevade, Minas Gerais, could supply the steel industry demand, avid for charcoal, appropriately. By then, eucalypt had also started being used in house construction, after Navarro demystified the “Australian mahogany” the Americans praised so much and used in civil construction in California. He proved it wasn’t mahogany at all, rather eucalypt. After researching eucalypt, now spread all over Brazil, the tireless scientist sought new challenges. In 1924 he worked on the commission organized to eliminate coffee-beetle, in 1925 he published an essay on jute planting, and later studied the rubber tree. In an opportune return to study the eucalypt, he went to the United States in 1925 to test the use of eucalypt in paper manufacturing for the “O Estado de S. Paulo” newspaper, which had been tested successfully to print a paper in the State of Wisconsin, in December that year. Samples of the bobbins that had been made were still in Rio Claro, at Floresta Estadual Edmundo Navarro de Andrade, but Brazilian newspapers needed a more resistant paper, since, as yet today, the paper is pulled through several successive printers. In a new front, Navarro defended citriculture, convincing coffee farmers who had been achieving low yields in sandy soils to invest in citrus. The campaign was so successful that in 1930 Navarro de Andrade was invited to take over the Secretaria da Agricultura do Estado de São Paulo and, three years later, he was named the general director of the Ministério da Agricultura do Brasil. When he passed away, in 1941, Navarro de Andrade had left Brazil spotted with eucalypt forests as an economically viable option for native wood, which would certainly be much scarcer today had it not been for eucalypt.
