It was this leap that encouraged tens of thousands of small and mid-sized farmers to plant eucalypt with seedlings provided by the major companies which later bought the production. The companies associated to ABRAF maintain foment programs in 742 Brazilian towns, benefitting 1,088,457 people who plant eucalypt for these large consumers. The third leap is taking place now, with the development of advanced genetic research, genomics and biotechnology, work kicked-off in Brazil by the private initiative together with the universities and in which the American Energy Department itself has shown interest. Brazilian researcher work in this field is so important that the “Eucalypts Genome Network” (Eucagen), which proposed to undertake the complete sequencing of the eucalypt genome, accepted the Brazilian indication that the E. grandis be selected for this purpose. “Embrapa Recursos Genéticos e Biotecnologia” will be in charge of coordinating the Brazilian part of the program.
