Atlantic Forest - 92% destroyed to meet the demand for wood. Eight thousand years BC, after the end of the Ice Age, forests spread all over the Earth’s surface. The Northern Hemisphere was occupied by a huge forest formed mainly by birch trees, and, later oak trees, pine trees, ash-trees and chestnut trees, but these forests offered little diversity. Meanwhile, in tropical regions, such as Brazil, forests formed with an amazing biodiversity characteristic of the Atlantic Forest and Amazon Forest. This huge vegetable mass supported the multiplication of animals whose meet then started feeding human beings, the major predator. With abundant meet available, mankind multiplied to such a point that prey animals started thinning out in several regions; when the hunting expeditions finally started extending to areas that were so distant as to no longer feed the increasing population, the Neolithic Man started using his stone axes to slash the forest to open areas to plant wheat and barley and to form pastures for the first animals he would domesticate. When finally metal foundry was discovered, more forests were slashed for firewood used to make bronze weapons and tools. Tree slashing was so intense that in Babylon (2000 BC) it was common for homeowners to take their home’s doors with them when they moved, since wood was so scarce it would be too expensive to purchase another door. And it was a Babylonian king, Hamurabi, who enacted the first decree to punish anyone who cut a tree.
