O Eucalipto: um século no Brasil (The Eucalypt - Celso Foelkel

Em Minas Gerais, é o “Serviço Brasileiro de Apoio às Micro e Pequenas Empresas”,
SEBRAE, que também fomenta o plantio de eucalipto e com grande sucesso: até julho de
2007, cerca de 400 produtores rurais de nove municípios já tinham aderido ao projeto.
Alguns dos produtores não são tão pequenos, conta a gestora da iniciativa, Vânia
Guimarães. Ela cita o exemplo de Gilberto Diniz, que pretende plantar um milhão de
eucaliptos na sua gleba, no Noroeste do Estado.
Segundo Vânia, o Sebrae estava estudando a viabilidade de incentivar a apicultura
em uma área de eucaliptos da “Votorantim”, quando recebeu a informação de que a
empresa tem interesse em adquirir madeira também de pequenos produtores.
O maior problema dos produtores mineiros é a pouca disponibilidade de mudas
na região, explica a especialista. Há farta disponibilidade, porém, de assistência técnica,
informação e apoio. Os produtores estão chamando o eucalipto de “poupança verde”, pois
nada se perde e se o preço não for atraente no momento do corte, “é só deixar a árvore em
pé e aguardar um momento melhor do mercado”, explica.
Os produtores mineiros estão plantando o eucalipto na mesma área onde criam
gado, já que a árvore oferece sombra para a criação, não diminui a área de pasto e também
usam a árvore tanto para atender à própria necessidade de lenha, como para venda ‘in
natura’ a empreiteiros da construção civil ou ainda para a indústria.

In Minas Gerais, the Sebrae also foments eucalypt planting, and very successfully: by
July 2007, some 400 rural producers from nine towns had already joined the project.
Some of the producers aren’t that small, either, says the initiative’s manager, Vânia
Guimarães. She mentions the example of Gilberto Diniz, who intends to plant a million
eucalypt trees on his land, in Northwestern Minas.
According to Vânia, the Sebrae was analyzing the viability of encouraging apiculture
in a “Votorantim” eucalypt area when it was informed the company is interested in
purchasing wood also from small producers.
The main problem Minas Gerais producers face is the small seedling availability in the
region, says the specialist; technical assistance, information and support are widely
available, though. Producers are calling eucalypt “green savings,” since nothing is lost
if the price is not attractive when harvest time comes: “you just leave the tree there and
wait for the market to improve,” she explained.
Minas Gerais producers are planting eucalypt in the same areas where they raise cattle,
since the tree provides shade to the animals, does not reduce pasture areas, and even
they use the tree, both to supply their own firewood needs and to sell it ‘in natura’ to
civil construction companies or even to industries.
