Can Sports projects contribute to conflict prevention? An analysis of if sportsprojects organised by danish NGOs can contribute to prevent violent conflicts Abstract Sports projects organised by NGO´s with the purpose to prevent violent conflict in civil society are an area that are in need of better documentation and examinition. The existing literature on the field is very limited. Therefore this dissertation seeks to expose areas where sports projects can contribute to conflict prevention by listing ideal criterias for the sportsprojects to live up to, if they want to prevent conflicts. The purpose of the dissertation is also to explore to what extent existing sportsprojects organized by Danish NGO´s are living up to these criterias and then presumably are contributing to conflict prevention. I identify three core areas where sport used as ‘Sport for all’ can work as an instrument for creating social change and development for both the individuals and societal structure in post conflict societies in order to prevent conflict. The three areas are empowerment, social trust and democracy. Furthermore the areas concerning the concept conflict prevention and NGO methods are also examined. For every area there are several ideal criteria formulated in order for NGO´s, and their sports project to follow, to ensure that they prevent conflict. Three Danish sports projects organised by CCPA, GES and GAM3 are analysed on every listed ideal criteria. The analysis shows that the NGO´s and their sports projects all to a different extent live up to the different criterias. No area of the ideal criterias can be said to be especially neglected or fulfilled. The conclusion is that the Danish sports projects to a certain extent can be said to live up to the listed ideal criterias on the chosen areas. This result of the analysis does not show or prove that sports projects for sure can prevent conflicts from happening but merely, that sports projects have a chance to play a positive role, if the NGOs are able to fulfill certain criterias when planning and implementing their sports projects 4
