1. You‟re sleeping so restlessly,
In the deep of night, your eyelids are trembling.
You‟re squeezing my arm in a childish grip,
So unpractised, boyish and hard.
You‟re squeezing my hand and your forehead is wet,
Inside you a germ is budding to a man.
Chorus I love you so,
My youth, while you‟re sleeping.
You‟re resting so safe on my naked arm,
I love you so,
You still belong to the night.
2. You‟re sleeping restlessly,
And your cheek is pale you are turning too often.
Lie still, my child, so we can sleep,
„Cause how long can we two keep sharing,
My bed and the moon before you‟re growing from me,
On you‟re chin I feel the down of a grownup man.
3. You‟re sleeping so easy,
It is slowly dawning, a close October morning.
I watch by your sleeping body,
In the darkness that swallows us both.
I‟m dizzy with gladness and haunted with fear,
I sleep with a little boy in my arms.
