Formulating an end of year letter
Briefe zum Jahresende an die Geschäftspartner sind eine schöne Tradition. Bei der Formulierung von
Korrespondenz an englischsprachige Empfänger gilt es einige Regeln zu beachten, die wir Ihnen hier vorstellen.
The contents
Typically, an end of year letter will
contain the following:
> a review of the company’s performance,
> a summary of main projects that
were carried out,
> an overview of the success of those
projects including specific data or
visuals,
> praise and thanks for good work,
> a look to the future.

Starting out
Opening phrases set the tone of your
letter. If you are writing an external letter
for clients, partners and staff, your
tone will probably be more formal:
2011 has been an outstanding year
for NetTEch GmbH. During the past
year, we have grown considerably
both in terms of global staff, subsidiaries
and in product range.
On the other hand, internal letters will
have a more personal touch and use the
“I”-form:
I cannot believe how quickly the year
2011 has gone by. As the MD of Net-
Tech, it has been a privilege to work
with such a talented and dedicated
team.
Reviewing company performance
Here, specific details are more useful and
serve more purpose than vague praise:
for example, it could be an opportunity
to present the projects the company has
initiated or completed over the past 12
months, as well as to remind business
partners of successes such as awards won.
NetTEch’s partners developed the prototype
for an energy friendly computer
programme which still maintains
computer processing speeds.
NetTech launched its first opensource
software project, a tool that
makes it easier to programme multicore
chips.
NetTech initiated the innovative
“Cleaner Earth” Campaign in July
this year which aims to cut our CO 2
emissions in 2012 by 4 %.
NetTech participated in the Global
Standards Awards and achieved the
Prize for Best Overall Achiever.
Praising individuals
Where congratulations are due, especially
during difficult times, you can use
something along the lines of the following
phrases to single out an individual
or a team for special praise:
> Congratulations are due to Ramesh
R. Sharma and Ted Wilson for their
success in founding Kafas Global, a 75
% subsidiary of NetTech in Bombay.
The head offices have already been
inaugurated and we look forward to
further excellent achievements from
the Indian team next year.

they faced due to understaffing this
year. Well done and we hope to continue
