The festive season?
Christmas may mark the festive season
for Europeans but it is important to
remember that this is not the case globally.
This will affect how overt you are
in reference to Christmas. The end of
the year, although celebrated on a different
date in many Asian countries, is
a culturally neutral event and therefore
more globally appealing.
The sample text above handles this issue by
mentioning it indirectly with “festive period”.
However, finding out how your business
partner’s country celebrates the Western
Christmas period, if at all, is a good
idea, so that you know whether to mention
Christmas or to stick with more neutral
greetings. Inserting a greeting in their language
could be a good way to cement ties
with your partner and show cultural sensitivity
– but do remember to double check
this with a native speaker if possible.

of meetings here in Cologne in February to discuss our continued cooperation.

address him or her.
2. The fi rst paragraph summarizes what has happened over the last year.
3. The second paragraph introduces the good news and points to future contact.
4. The third paragraph thanks the partner and passes on seasonal greetings to the
rest of the staff.
5. The fi nal paragraph is a good place to introduce any changes that may be
coming up in the new year.
