Originally conceived as an artist colony of three studio-residences about
a communal garden, one of the clients, M. Canale of 3 rue des Arts, did
not build his house according to the architects‘ plan. The building with
passarelle, or bridge, was owned by Oscar Miestchaninoff, the other by
Jacques Lipchitz, who executed sculptures for several of Le Corbusier‘s
projects including Villa de Mandrot.
As combination studio-residences, the buildings are variations on
the house executed for Ozenfant, which in turn has precedent in the
nineteenth-century Parisian workshop and in Le Corbusier‘s Maison
Citrohan, with its complex of sources. The functional requirements of large
sculpture necessitated that the studios be returned to their traditional
placement on ground level with dwellings above, the inverse of Atelier
Ozenfant. Dignifi ed prismatic volumes, these three studio-residences are
distinct from the fl uid vision of the column grid with cantilever slabs set
forth in the Maison Dom-ino.
