Laura Dahlmeier wins
overall World Cup
In the 2016/17 winter
season Laura Dahlmeier,
biathlete from Garmisch-
Partenkirchen was able
to celebrate the biggest
successes of her career so
far: the 23-year-old won
the overall World Cup and
six World Championship
medals. Congratulations!
Now begins the training
phase for the Olympic
Winter Games of 2017/2018
in Pyeongchang/South
Korea. For more information

125 years of Bauerntheater
Partenkirchen
In 2017 Partenkirchen’s
theatre Bauerntheater
celebrates a special
anniversary: a team of
24
voluntary actors has been
performing pieces that
are popular with both,
locals and guests, for 125
years. On occasion of the
anniversary a special
performance will be staged
on an open-air stage this
year. For more information
see page 186.
New speed discipline at
FIS Alpine Ski World Cup
A new downhill course
for women will see its
premiere at the popular
Kandahar-race in 2018,
replacing the Super-G: the
new speed discipline is a
short downhill course that
is characterised by two
rounds. For the second
round a rule-of-30 applies,
which means that only
the 30 best starters get
to start again – and just
like in slalom the starting
order is reversed. This race
format will take place in
Garmisch-Partenkirchen
for the first time and it
will only take place here
this coming winter. In
case the FIS approves the
test run and the audience
appreciates it, other top
athletes can look forward
to proving their skills in
the new speed-discipline
in the future.
New Zugspitze Cable Car
On December 21 2017,
the moment will finally
come: the new Zugspitze
Cable Car leading up
to Germany’s highest
peak will open. Since the
Eibsee Cable Car went
out of service in April the
construction works have
entered the final phase.
Both the planning and
the construction phase of
the new aerial tramway
took three years and the
result will not only impress
with new world records,
it’ll also grant astonishing
panoramic views. For more

Alexander Liebreich
to become Brigitte
Fassbaender’s successor
The renowned
Richard-Strauss-Festival
at the foot of Zugspitze
is known and popular
beyond the borders
of the region – a large
part of the success can
certainly be attributed
to the artistic leadership
of Brigitte Fassbaender
who has been in charge
of making un forgettable
musical moments happen
every year since 1989. In
2018 conductor Alexander
Liebreich from Regensburg
will succeed her, he was in
charge of the Polish Radio
Symphony Orchestra since
2012 and has received a
Bavarian State Award.
New Hotels
Garmisch-Partenkirchen
is constantly changing
and in the course of the
coming years it can look
forward to new, exciting
hotel concepts. The organic
apartment hotel quartier
has been welcoming its
first guests since the 2016
winter season, as of 2017
all those seeking relaxation
with a view can check into

and in 2018 a hostel
is due to open within the
framework of the moun10

businesses that are also
deeply rooted in the
region around the foot
of Zugspitze. New
