institution: Schneefernerhaus, named after the glacier<br />
that used to be close by. At 2,650 altitude metres<br />
the impressive 9-floor building sits on the Zugspitzsummit’s<br />
southern face. Today Schneefernerhaus is<br />
a research station, observatory, and communication<br />
institution – but its history goes back to the 1930s.<br />

Today climate research takes place where 87 years ago mundane holidaymakers<br />
were among the first to enjoy winter sports. In the 1930s,<br />
Schneefernerhaus was opened as a luxury hotel and until 1990 it was<br />
run as such – with interruptions. The guests enjoyed the comfort of<br />
a cog railway that led up to the building from <strong>Garmisch</strong> through a<br />
4,452metre-long tunnel in the mountain – which is essential today.<br />
‘Once a month we have the possibility to transport heavy equipment<br />
up to 2,650 altitude metres. And in cases of extreme danger the tunnel<br />
would still serve as a final escape route, too’, Inga Beck from Schneefernerhaus<br />
points out.<br />
From risk to success story<br />
In 1999 the building was reopened as environmental research station<br />
in charge of looking at the effects of climate change from different<br />
perspectives and disciplines. A special tunnel through the Zugspitz<br />
massif from the Austrian side leads to Schneefernerhaus and offers<br />
ideal conditions to measure and research the permafrost. Medical<br />
altitude research also yields new knowledge on allergies and atmospheric<br />
research is dedicated to determining the content of harmful<br />
substances and greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Thanks to the<br />
state-of-the-art laboratory and building technology the environmental<br />
research station on Zugspitze offers the ideal conditions for researchers<br />
and their work. All those who are interested in seeing what<br />
the everyday worklife at 2,650 altitude metres looks like can take a<br />
close look themselves. “During guided tours that are offered by the<br />
adult education centre in <strong>Garmisch</strong>-<strong>Partenkirchen</strong> we and all those<br />
that are interested peek behind the scenes of the Bavarian Centre for<br />
Altitude and Climate Research and provide exciting insight into the<br />
areas of research”, Inga Beck tells us.<br />
