kilometres the Eibsee cable car covered, it<br />
would have gone around the world 76 times,<br />
this past April it finally ceased operations.<br />
However, even if the retirement of the wellknown<br />
aerial tramway touches those who<br />
witnessed its construction, members of staff<br />
of Bayerische Zugspitzbahn as well as locals<br />
and guests, it’s not all doom and gloom:<br />
as of 21 December 2017 the new Zugspitze<br />
Cable Car will fill in as a worthy successor,<br />
with plenty of sophisticated elements and<br />
innovation.<br />
The Zugspitze Cable Car breaks three world records: with 127 metres,<br />
the steel pillar that was constructed for the aerial tramway is the<br />
highest in the world, with 1,945 metres the total altitude difference<br />
covered in one section also is the longest worldwide and the longest<br />
span field in the world is 3,213 metres. The new aerial tramway really<br />
is a superlative project! It’s already a given that the new Zugspitze<br />
Cable is not just unique when it comes to construction and technical<br />
aspects but that it will also make history in terms of size and complexity<br />
– a big day for the company history of Bayerische Zugspitzbahn.<br />
<strong>No</strong> more long waiting times<br />
<strong>No</strong>t only does the new cable car impress with much more comfortable<br />
rides, the waiting times are also much shorter. And glass will<br />
play an important role: the modern valley station provides visitors<br />
with a free view of Eibsee and Zugspitze. And the cable cars’ glass<br />
walls guarantee panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.<br />
Grand finale<br />
Germany’s highest-situated construction site entered its final phase<br />
on 9 January 2017. In May and June, the 153-ton carrier cables<br />
were delivered to Grainau in Upper Bavaria, all the way from<br />
Romanshorn in Switzerland – the cables are mounted in July and<br />
August. A milestone in October: the two new cabins will be mounted.<br />
Until the ceremonial opening on 21 December 2017 all those<br />
who are interested have the possibility to visit the construction site<br />
during a guided tour that takes place twice daily and Bayerische<br />
Zugspitzbahn also has a construction diary online where webcams<br />
continuously film the progress.<br />
Sport & Freizeit<br />
Breathe in fresh mountain air – despite the construction site<br />
All those who wanted to see Germany’s highest peak at 2,962<br />
altitude metres before the new cable car is opened can relax: between<br />
3 April and 20 December 2017 Zugspitze can still be reached<br />
with the cog railway and the glacier railway. That way visitors can<br />
still enjoy the wonderful view of around 400 peaks in four alpine<br />
countries during the final construction phase!<br />
