exeRcise 14.4: what is an Athlete?<br />

objective: To c<strong>on</strong>sider the attributes of athletes and the barriers that athletes with disabilities<br />

face in accessing their right to participate in sport<br />

Time: 30 minutes<br />

Materials: Chart paper and markers or blackboard and chalk<br />

1. brainstorm/discuss:<br />

Ask participants to brainstorm<br />

• What are the general attributes of an athlete?<br />

• What words or phrases come to mind in thinking about an athlete?<br />

Next, ask participants to think about an athlete with a disability. Record resp<strong>on</strong>ses <strong>on</strong> chart<br />

paper.<br />

• What do you think about when you think about an athlete with a disability?<br />

• What words come to mind?<br />

2. Analyze:<br />

• How are the resp<strong>on</strong>ses different?<br />

• How are they the same?<br />

• Does anything about these two lists surprise you?<br />

3. discuss:<br />

• Are there athletes with disabilities in your community?<br />

• If so, what kinds of sports do they engage in?<br />

• If not, why not?<br />

• What organizati<strong>on</strong>s at the community, nati<strong>on</strong>al, and internati<strong>on</strong>al levels might support<br />

the rights of athletes with disabilities? (C<strong>on</strong>sider both governmental as well as n<strong>on</strong>governmental<br />

bodies).<br />

Variati<strong>on</strong>: This exercise may be easily adapted to address artists, musicians and other<br />

participants in cultural life, sport and recreati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
