objective: To examine discriminati<strong>on</strong> in tourism and tourism development and to c<strong>on</strong>sider<br />

how to take acti<strong>on</strong> against it<br />

Time: 60 minutes<br />

materials: Chart paper and markers or blackboard and chalk<br />

1. list:<br />

Ask participants what they c<strong>on</strong>sider are the main problems of discriminati<strong>on</strong> or barriers in<br />

tourism for pers<strong>on</strong>s with disabilities. List these.<br />

2. Plan:<br />

Divide participants into small groups. Ask each group to choose a problem from the list that<br />

they would like to focus <strong>on</strong>. Give these instructi<strong>on</strong>s:<br />

a. Plan a five-minute presentati<strong>on</strong> to a mock “Tourism Development Board” that includes<br />

officials, representatives of the tourist industry, and members of the public;<br />

b. Choose a spokespers<strong>on</strong> for your presentati<strong>on</strong> and some<strong>on</strong>e to serve <strong>on</strong> the “Tourism<br />

Development Board.”;<br />

c. While the groups plan presentati<strong>on</strong>s, each member of the “Tourism Development Board”<br />

meets to decide <strong>on</strong> their roles. (These roles should reflect the attitudes, both positive<br />

and negative, found in the community);<br />

d. Presentati<strong>on</strong>s should:<br />

• Describe the discriminati<strong>on</strong>, including whom it affects and, if possible, its cause(s);<br />

• Relate the discriminati<strong>on</strong> to a human right in the CRPD;<br />

• Describe the effects of discriminati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> the lives of people with disabilities;<br />

• Describe how addressing the problem can improve the lives of pers<strong>on</strong>s with<br />

disabilities, and of people generally;<br />

• Propose next steps or specific acti<strong>on</strong>s that can be taken to address the problem.<br />
