ChilDRen with DisAbilities?<br />

Children’s rights have foundati<strong>on</strong>s in provisi<strong>on</strong>s of internati<strong>on</strong>al law. The Universal<br />

declarati<strong>on</strong> of human Rights (UDHR) 2 Article 25, the c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> the Rights of the<br />

child (CRC) 3 and the 1993 Un standard Rules <strong>on</strong> the equalizati<strong>on</strong> of opportunities for<br />

Pers<strong>on</strong>s with disabilities (Standard Rules) 4 address the rights of children with disabilities.<br />

The 1948 Universal Declarati<strong>on</strong> of Human Rights (UDHR) menti<strong>on</strong>s children in Article 25 and<br />

26. Article 26 states that motherhood and childhood are entitled to special care and assistance<br />

and that all children, regardless of whether they are born in or out of wedlock, shall enjoy the<br />

same social protecti<strong>on</strong>. Article 26 entitles every<strong>on</strong>e to equal access to educati<strong>on</strong> and allows<br />

parents the right to choose the kind of educati<strong>on</strong> given to their child.<br />

The 1989 CRC, the most universally ratified of all human rights treaties (<strong>on</strong>ly the USA and<br />

Somalia are not States Parties), lays the foundati<strong>on</strong> for and defines the many rights that<br />
