The States Parties to the present C<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>…<br />

(i) Recognizing further the diversity of pers<strong>on</strong>s with disabilities,<br />

(k) Recognizing the need to promote and protect the human rights of all pers<strong>on</strong>s with<br />

disabilities, including those who require more intensive support,<br />

(p) C<strong>on</strong>cerned about the difficult c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s faced by pers<strong>on</strong>s with disabilities who are<br />

subject to multiple or aggravated forms of discriminati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> the basis of race, colour,<br />

sex, language, religi<strong>on</strong>, political or other opini<strong>on</strong>, nati<strong>on</strong>al, ethnic, indigenous or social<br />

origin, property, birth, age or other status,<br />

(t) Highlighting the fact that the majority of pers<strong>on</strong>s with disabilities live in c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s of<br />

poverty, and in this regard recognizing the critical need to address the negative<br />

impact of poverty <strong>on</strong> pers<strong>on</strong>s with disabilities[.]<br />

obJecTives<br />

The exercises and background informati<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tained in this chapter will enable participants to<br />

work towards the following objectives:<br />

• Understand the multiple forms of discriminati<strong>on</strong> that sub-groups within the general<br />

populati<strong>on</strong> of pers<strong>on</strong>s with disabilities may face and to identify discriminati<strong>on</strong> against<br />

them as a human rights issue<br />

• Identify ways in which the human rights of these sub-groups have been promoted or<br />

denied<br />

• Explain the importance of affording all pers<strong>on</strong>s with disabilities a voice in decisi<strong>on</strong>making<br />

processes that c<strong>on</strong>cern their interests, including the participati<strong>on</strong> of pers<strong>on</strong>s with<br />

disabilities in development decisi<strong>on</strong>-making<br />

• Understand and apply the provisi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> the human rights of pers<strong>on</strong>s with disabilities<br />

who may be subject to multiple forms of discriminati<strong>on</strong> in the UN C<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> the<br />

Rights of Pers<strong>on</strong>s with Disabilities (CRPD)<br />

• Highlight possible strategies to advance the rights of all pers<strong>on</strong>s with disabilities<br />
