Bocaccio<br />

Description of the species<br />

The bocaccio is a rockfish species that genetic analyses suggest is composed of two distinct<br />

populations (Wishard et al. 1980, Matala et al. 2004). A southern population exists along the<br />

Pacific coasts of Mexican <strong>and</strong> California <strong>and</strong> is separated from a northern population by a region<br />

of apparent scarcity from northern California to southern Oregon (MacCall <strong>and</strong> He 2002b). It<br />

has been proposed that oceanographic features, such as current patterns restricting larval<br />

movement, are responsible for population discreteness (Matala et al. 2004, NMFS 2008e). The<br />

northern population is the entity that is proposed for listing. However, the presence of a third<br />

population has also been suggested (Queen Charlotte Isl<strong>and</strong>, Vancouver Isl<strong>and</strong> to Point<br />

Conception, California, <strong>and</strong> south of Point Conception)(Matala et al. 2004). For stock<br />

management purposes, the NMFS <strong>and</strong> Pacific Fisheries Management Council recognize these<br />

populations as separate stocks.<br />

Distribution<br />

Bocaccio occur from the central Baja peninsula of Mexico north along the continental shelf <strong>and</strong><br />

slope as far as Stepovac Bay, Alaska (Love et al. 2002).<br />

Habitat <strong>and</strong> movement<br />

Preferred bocaccio habitat is largely dependent upon the life stage of an individual. Larvae <strong>and</strong><br />

young juveniles tend to be found in deeper offshore regions (1-148 km offshore), but associated<br />

with the surface <strong>and</strong> occasionally with floating kelp mats (Hartmann 1987, Love et al. 2002,<br />

Emery et al. 2006). As individuals mature into older juveniles <strong>and</strong> adults, they transition into<br />

shallow waters <strong>and</strong> settle to the bottom, preferring algae-covered rocky, eelgrass, or s<strong>and</strong> habitats<br />

<strong>and</strong> aggregating into schools (Eschmeyer et al. 1983a, Love et al. 1991). After a few weeks, fish<br />

move into slightly deeper waters of 18-30 m <strong>and</strong> occupy rocky reefs (Feder et al. 1974, Carr<br />

1983, Eschmeyer et al. 1983a, Johnson 2006, Love <strong>and</strong> Yoklavich 2008). As adults, bocaccio<br />

may be found in depths of 12-478 m, but tend to remain in shallow waters on the continental<br />

shelf (20-250 m), still associating mostly with reefs or other hard substrate, but may move over<br />

mud flats (Feder et al. 1974, Kramer <strong>and</strong> O'Connell 1995, Love et al. 2002, Love et al. 2005,<br />

Love <strong>and</strong> York 2005, Love et al. 2006). Artificial habitats, such as platform structures, also<br />

appear to be suitable habitat for bocaccio (Love <strong>and</strong> York 2006). Adults may occupy territories<br />

of 200-400 hectares, but can venture outside of this territory (Hartmann 1987). Adults tend to<br />

occupy deeper waters in the southern population compared to the northern population (Love et<br />

al. 2002). Adults are not as benthic as juveniles <strong>and</strong> may occur as much as 30 m above the<br />

bottom <strong>and</strong> move 100 m vertically during the course of a day as they move between different<br />

areas (Love et al. 2002, Starr et al. 2002). Prior to severe population reductions, bocaccio<br />

appeared to frequent the Tacoma Narrows in Washington State (DeLacy et al. 1964, Haw <strong>and</strong><br />

Buckley 1971, Miller <strong>and</strong> Borton 1980).<br />
