How could Jehovah and Jesus Christ have the same names and titles if they are not of the
same or identical essence—divine?
REDEEMER
In the Old Testament God the Father is called "Redeemer":
"'Do not be afraid, O worm Jacob, O little Israel, for I Myself will help you,'
declared the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel" (Isa 41:12).
There are two Hebrew words for "redemption" in the Hebrew Scriptures. Both are used
by Hosea in the same verse:
"I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death."
(Hos 13:14)
The words "redeem" or "redemption" are found often on the lips of the psalmist:
"O Israel, put your hope in the Lord, for with the Lord is unfailing love and with
Him is full redemption. He Himself will redeem Israel from all their sins."
(Ps 130:7-8)
There is a direct parallel to this verse in Titus 2:13 with the only difference being that
now Christ is identified with God (Titus 2:10):
". . . while we wait for the blessed hope—the glorious appearing of our great
God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave Himself to redeem us from all
wickedness and to purify for Himself a people that are His very own, eager to do
what is good."
A different Greek word for "redemption" (exegorasen) is used in Galatians 3:13:
"Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us,
for it is written, 'Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree. He redeemed us
in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through
Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Holy Spirit.'"
This same word is also used in Revelation 5:9:
"And they sang a new song:
'You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain,
and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language
and people and nation."
