The tarih was written as a way to pay a m<strong>in</strong>net borcu towards Mehmed II 74 dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> author's old age, and reflects accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> editor feel<strong>in</strong>gs of nostalgia. 75<br />

The work <strong>in</strong>deed <strong>in</strong>vokes <strong>the</strong> excitement of battle, <strong>the</strong> ganimet to be ga<strong>in</strong>ed, <strong>in</strong><br />

short, <strong>the</strong> good old days. His efforts to portray <strong>the</strong> events <strong>in</strong> a positive light even<br />

go as far as to describe <strong>the</strong> sieges of Belgrade <strong>in</strong> 1456 and of Rhodes <strong>in</strong> 1480 as<br />

victories. 76 The pleasures of life on campaign <strong>in</strong>cluded w<strong>in</strong>e and women. When<br />

<strong>the</strong> author tells about <strong>the</strong> Albanian campaign of 1466, he boastfully describes <strong>the</strong><br />

câriye kızlar he ga<strong>in</strong>ed as booty. 77 And whereas Oruç Beğ mentions that Mehmed<br />

II had to stay <strong>in</strong> Filibe because of plague dur<strong>in</strong>g his Albanian campaign, <strong>the</strong><br />

eyewitness Tursun beğ admits that although <strong>in</strong> Filibe <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ter was harsh, <strong>the</strong>re<br />

was plenty of party<strong>in</strong>g go<strong>in</strong>g on ! 78 Obviously, <strong>the</strong>re is no room for plague <strong>in</strong> this<br />

narrative.<br />

8. Düstûrnâme by Enverî. Enverî f<strong>in</strong>ished this work that was composed of<br />

manzum verses <strong>in</strong> 1465. Likewise, <strong>the</strong>re is no mention of plague <strong>in</strong> this epic<br />

poem 79 .<br />

9. Kitâb-ı Cihan - Nümâ by Mehmed Neşri 80 . This important chronicle that was<br />

written <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> late fifteenth century also yields only two plague outbreaks for <strong>the</strong><br />

whole period covered, that is from <strong>the</strong> creation of <strong>the</strong> world to <strong>the</strong> reign of Bayezid<br />

II. For <strong>the</strong> first time s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> Tarih Takvimler, <strong>the</strong> plague outbreak of 1347/48<br />

appears aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> a chronicle, although not it is not reported as an outbreak, but<br />
