Orhan <strong>in</strong> March 1362 202 and <strong>the</strong> stylistical coherence with <strong>the</strong> notice that<br />
described <strong>the</strong> plague leads Schre<strong>in</strong>er to presume that <strong>the</strong> Ottoman ruler might have<br />
been a victim of <strong>the</strong> plague too. An additional argument <strong>in</strong> favour of this <strong>the</strong>sis<br />
consists of <strong>the</strong> fact that as <strong>the</strong> Ottomans had besieged Edirne <strong>in</strong> 1361, chances of<br />
becom<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>fected were <strong>in</strong>deed high. For <strong>the</strong> city had most likely suffered from <strong>the</strong><br />
general plague epidemic of 1361/1362 as recorded by <strong>the</strong> Brachea Chronika also<br />
existed <strong>in</strong> Edirne 203 . Although <strong>the</strong> Ottoman chronicles do not allow to v<strong>in</strong>dicate<br />
this <strong>the</strong>sis, it is just possible that <strong>the</strong> Ottoman chroniclers preferred to depict Orhan<br />
Ghazi's <strong>death</strong> from grief caused by <strong>the</strong> mourn<strong>in</strong>g over <strong>the</strong> loss of his heroic son.<br />
Such a <strong>death</strong> would befit one of <strong>the</strong> founders of <strong>the</strong> Ottoman dynasty ra<strong>the</strong>r than<br />
be<strong>in</strong>g one of <strong>the</strong> myriad victims of an epidemic.<br />
Plague appeared aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> Pera <strong>in</strong> 1381/82 accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> Byzant<strong>in</strong>e Short<br />
Chronicles. 204 Fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>formation on <strong>the</strong> Ottomans is lack<strong>in</strong>g, but <strong>in</strong> view of <strong>the</strong><br />
commercial contacts described above, it is likely that <strong>the</strong> Ottoman territory also<br />
suffered outbreaks those years. Although <strong>the</strong>ir recorded impact was more limited,<br />
subsequent plague outbreaks would recur <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Byzant<strong>in</strong>e and Ottoman <strong>territories</strong><br />
with <strong>the</strong> regularity that was also observed elsewhere. In addition to <strong>the</strong> outbreak of<br />
1381/82 <strong>in</strong> Pera 205 , The Brachea Chronika recorded outbreaks <strong>in</strong> 1365 occurr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />
Crete, 206 <strong>in</strong> 1374 <strong>in</strong> Arta, 207 1376 aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> Crete, 208 and 1388/89 once more <strong>in</strong><br />
202<br />
The <strong>death</strong> of Orhan is likewise dated 763 AH or 1362 <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nurosmaniye chronicle. Turan,<br />

Apparently, Panaretos mentions <strong>the</strong> plague outbreak as hav<strong>in</strong>g struck Edirne <strong>in</strong> <strong>early</strong> 1362. As<br />
quoted by Franz Bab<strong>in</strong>ger. Beiträge zur Frühgeschichte der Türkenherrschaft <strong>in</strong> Rumelien (14.15.<br />

These outbreaks were also extensively mentioned <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> letters by Cydones that will be<br />
