devastat<strong>in</strong>g plague outbreak <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Balkans, was discussed <strong>in</strong> detail by Lowry 119 .<br />
The ra<strong>the</strong>r sardonic tone with which Doukas describes this episode can be read as<br />
an expression of <strong>the</strong> animosity he felt for <strong>the</strong> Ottoman ruler.<br />
We see that <strong>the</strong> Byzant<strong>in</strong>e and post-Byzant<strong>in</strong>e sources register plague<br />
outbreaks more often than <strong>the</strong>ir Ottoman counterparts. For this, several reasons can<br />
be mentioned. Letters, which are lack<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> Ottoman review, form an<br />
important part of <strong>the</strong> text material. By <strong>the</strong>ir very nature, <strong>the</strong>y reveal events that<br />
have a direct impact on <strong>the</strong> writer's life and <strong>the</strong> devastation caused by plague<br />
figures prom<strong>in</strong>ently <strong>in</strong> it. The Byzant<strong>in</strong>e chroniclers, too, had a good reason not to<br />
downplay plague, for it offered an explanation for Byzant<strong>in</strong>e failure aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
enemy. 120 In contrast, <strong>the</strong> Byzant<strong>in</strong>e church showed an almost total lack of <strong>in</strong>terest<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> disease, if <strong>the</strong> regestes are a guidel<strong>in</strong>e 121 . A prayer for <strong>the</strong> deliverance from<br />
<strong>the</strong> Barbarian <strong>in</strong>vasions, <strong>the</strong> civil war, fam<strong>in</strong>e and plague is <strong>the</strong> only trace <strong>the</strong><br />
outbreaks left, mention<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> disease as <strong>the</strong> last of a depress<strong>in</strong>g list of<br />
problems. 122 Unlike <strong>the</strong> Venetians, <strong>the</strong> Byzant<strong>in</strong>e writers were no Ottoman<br />
watchers. 123 Although <strong>the</strong>y had ample opportunity to observe <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong>y ei<strong>the</strong>r<br />
were <strong>in</strong>different to <strong>the</strong> condition of <strong>the</strong>ir adversaries/allies seemed to have escaped<br />
<strong>the</strong>m, or <strong>the</strong>y did not care to record it.<br />
