Fourteenth-Century Byzant<strong>in</strong>e Sources<br />
When <strong>the</strong> second plague pandemic first appeared <strong>in</strong> Byzant<strong>in</strong>e territory, <strong>the</strong><br />
emperor John Cantacuzenos 101 and <strong>the</strong> long-serv<strong>in</strong>g Byzant<strong>in</strong>e statesman<br />
Demetrius Cydones recorded <strong>the</strong> devastation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir writ<strong>in</strong>gs. Cydones,<br />
especially, would reflect <strong>the</strong> psychological impact of <strong>the</strong> epidemic <strong>in</strong> his letters. 102<br />
Dur<strong>in</strong>g his long life 103 , he would be <strong>the</strong> witness of o<strong>the</strong>r outbreaks, which are<br />
mentioned <strong>in</strong> his volum<strong>in</strong>ous correspondance. In <strong>the</strong> exchange of letters between<br />
him and <strong>the</strong> emperor Manuel II Paleologos, <strong>the</strong> topic of plague is also discussed.<br />
The important Byzant<strong>in</strong>e scholar and opponent of <strong>the</strong> Hesychast movement,<br />
Nicephoras Gregoras, is yet ano<strong>the</strong>r source for <strong>the</strong> first outbreak of 1347/48.<br />
The Byzant<strong>in</strong>e authors extensively described <strong>the</strong> first Black Death outbreak<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir writ<strong>in</strong>gs and later outbreaks also appear <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir letters. Their <strong>in</strong>formation<br />
correlates well with <strong>the</strong> dates recorded for outbreaks <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> eastern Mediterranean<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Byzant<strong>in</strong>e Short Chronicles 104 and <strong>the</strong> Regestes of <strong>the</strong> Venetian Senate<br />
perta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to Romania. 105<br />
Fifteenth-Century Byzant<strong>in</strong>e and Post-Byzant<strong>in</strong>e Greek sources<br />
Lowry claimed that <strong>the</strong> later Greek sources were more rigorous than <strong>the</strong><br />
Ottoman ones <strong>in</strong> mention<strong>in</strong>g plague, enumerat<strong>in</strong>g n<strong>in</strong>e outbreaks between 1403<br />
