Contar<strong>in</strong>i, had already reported that a great epidemic had struck both Edirne and<br />
Istanbul. 231 And <strong>the</strong>n arrived news from Ragusa : a messenger from Edirne had<br />
confirmed that Selim had died <strong>in</strong> a place called Ogras, situated between Istanbul<br />
and Edirne. 232 Accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> writer of <strong>the</strong> letter, this was <strong>the</strong> very location were<br />
Selim had fought his fa<strong>the</strong>r. Some of those who heard this announcement might<br />
have remembered <strong>the</strong> news that had been read to <strong>the</strong>m announc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> malediction<br />
of Selim's dy<strong>in</strong>g fa<strong>the</strong>r Bayezid eight years earlier. If his sons were to fight among<br />
each o<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong>y would be cursed ! 233 Evidently, it took much longer for a letter to<br />
arrive from Istanbul than from Ragusa. Therefore, <strong>the</strong> letter of <strong>the</strong> Venetian Baylo<br />
<strong>in</strong> Istanbul with news of Selim be<strong>in</strong>g seriously ill, arrived after <strong>the</strong> announcement<br />
of his <strong>death</strong>. As was <strong>the</strong> habit for letters that carried news of great importance, it<br />
was encoded. 234 He wrote that Selim was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> countryside and had been suffer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
