that <strong>the</strong> Ottomans were also exposed to this outbreak. Constant<strong>in</strong>ople had barely<br />
time to recover from <strong>the</strong> epidemic before it became plague-stricken once more, for<br />
<strong>in</strong> 1396, <strong>the</strong> ships of <strong>the</strong> Crusaders brought plague back to <strong>the</strong> city 215 . The<br />
outbreak <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Peloponnesus <strong>in</strong> 1398/1399 would be <strong>the</strong> last one to be recorded <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> area <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fourteenth century. In <strong>the</strong> fifteenth century, <strong>the</strong> cha<strong>in</strong> of outbreaks<br />
would cont<strong>in</strong>ue, <strong>in</strong> Europe as well as <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ottoman territory. A series of m<strong>in</strong>or<br />
outbreaks would occasionally be followed by a major epidemic.<br />
One of <strong>the</strong>se took place <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> year 1409/1410 as described <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Byzant<strong>in</strong>e Short Chronicles 216 . Accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> chronicle, ten thousand people<br />
died <strong>in</strong> Constant<strong>in</strong>ople 217 among whom Theodoros Cantacuzenos, a scion of <strong>the</strong><br />
imperial dynastic family and member of <strong>the</strong> Senate. If we are to believe<br />
Sphrantzes, it was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same outbreak that Yusuf, <strong>the</strong> son of <strong>the</strong> Ottoman ruler<br />
Yıldırım (Thunderbolt) Bayezid, fell victim to <strong>the</strong> plague. Yusuf had been handed<br />
over as a hostage to <strong>the</strong> emperor Manuel after his fa<strong>the</strong>r's defeat <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> battle of<br />
Ankara, and eventually died of plague <strong>in</strong> Constant<strong>in</strong>ople. Doukas also described<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>death</strong> from plague of <strong>the</strong> Ottoman pr<strong>in</strong>ce, but he correlated <strong>the</strong> event with <strong>the</strong><br />
demise of <strong>the</strong> Russian pr<strong>in</strong>cess Ann, <strong>the</strong> child-bride of John Paleologus, which<br />
would <strong>in</strong> that case situate Yusuf's <strong>death</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> outbreak of 1417/18. 218 As<br />
Lowry (2003: 101) po<strong>in</strong>ts out it is Bayezid's son Yusuf that is <strong>the</strong> first member of<br />
<strong>the</strong> Ottoman dynasty whose <strong>death</strong> was unequivocally recorded as be<strong>in</strong>g caused by<br />
plague. It is no surprise that Yusuf was not mentioned <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ottoman chronicles.<br />
The Byzant<strong>in</strong>e chroniclers describe that aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> emperor's misgiv<strong>in</strong>gs, upon<br />
