were given to gather all the girls <strong>of</strong> that tribe over seven years <strong>of</strong> age<br />

and to take back all who had been given that year to their husbands.<br />

Four thousand girls were thus assembled. He ordered those who were<br />

daughters <strong>of</strong> emirs to be separated from the rest and made a yasa<br />

that all who were present should have intercourse with them. Two <strong>of</strong><br />

the girls expired. As for the rest, he drew them up in two rows. Those<br />

who were worthy <strong>of</strong> the ordo he dispatched to the harem, some he gave<br />

to the cheetah-keepers and falconers, and some to the various attendants<br />

at Court; others again he sent to the brothel and the hostel for<br />

ambassadors. As for those that still remained, he ordered all present,<br />

whether Mongols or Muslims, to carry them <strong>of</strong>f whilst their brothers,<br />

husbands, and kinsmen looked on not daring to breathe.<br />
