Chingiz-<strong>Khan</strong> had entrusted to Jochi <strong>Khan</strong> all the countries and ulus<br />

which lie in the region <strong>of</strong> the Erdish [the Irtysh] and the Altai mountains,<br />

and the summer and winter ranges in that area. He had also<br />

issued ayarllgh that he should take possession <strong>of</strong> the Qipchaq Steppe and<br />

the countries that had been conquered in that direction. Hisyurt was in<br />

the region <strong>of</strong> the Erdish, and his residence was there, as shown upon<br />

this picture.<br />

•w BRIEF ACCOUNT OF THE CAREER OF JOCHI KHAN<br />

Since Jochi <strong>Khan</strong> died before his father, it is impossible to record<br />

separately those events which refer to him personally. Accordingly, a<br />

brief summary is given here <strong>of</strong> his career, as it is recounted in detail<br />

in the history <strong>of</strong> Chingiz-<strong>Khan</strong>;8s an account will also be given <strong>of</strong> his<br />

illness and death.<br />

By Chingiz-<strong>Khan</strong>'s command he always took part in his campaigns<br />

and had conquered and subdued many countries and provinces.<br />

When Chingiz-<strong>Khan</strong> set out against the Tazik countries and came to<br />

the region <strong>of</strong> Otrar, he charged him with the conquest <strong>of</strong> the town and<br />
