fortresses in that region. That province is called <strong>Khan</strong> Siman.111<br />

He encamped around a great fortress called Do Li Shang112 and laid<br />

siege to it. He had sent Taghachar Noyan with 100,000 horsemen by way<br />

<strong>of</strong> the great river Qa'an-Keng11^ to besiege and reduce the great towns<br />

<strong>of</strong> Sang Yang Fu114 and Fang Cheng.115 When he arrived there, his<br />

army besieged [these towns] for a week and, not being able to capture<br />

them, withdrew and encamped in their own quarters. Mongke Qa'an<br />

was angry at this and reprimanded them. He sent this message: " When<br />

you return we shall order a suitable punishment." And Qpriqchii,115<br />

the brother <strong>of</strong> Yesiingge, sent this message to Taghachar: "Qubilai<br />

Qa'an took many towns and fortresses, but you have returned with<br />

stolen battles, that is, you have been busy only with food and drink."<br />
