Description<br />

Wall topped by one or two rows of stones<br />

of the same height and of similar<br />

sizes as a way of finishing it. The most<br />

common forms of crowned walls are:<br />

a line of stones laid flat (example 1);<br />

stones laid on <strong>en</strong>d (example 2); a<br />

double line with stones laid on <strong>en</strong>d on<br />

both sides of the wall (example 3). In<br />

some cases sticks placed at roughly<br />

equal intervals are embedded in the<br />

wall to hold up taut<strong>en</strong>ed iron wires.<br />

Uses<br />

Marking the boundary of <strong>en</strong>closed<br />

fields used for mixed almond, carob<br />

and herbaceous crop farming and at<br />

the same time prev<strong>en</strong>t access to the<br />

field from the road.<br />

Site<br />

In dry farming areas with smallholdings<br />

giv<strong>en</strong> over to herbaceous crops<br />

and trees and where walls are used to<br />

mark off the boundary of each holding.<br />
