CISTERN BUILT<br />

INTO A TERRACE WALL<br />

Description<br />

Artificial hollow dug inside a terrace<br />

wall to store infiltration water, from<br />

albellons (underground galleries) or<br />

from IIisars (flat, smooth stones).<br />

Uses<br />

Water collection for human consumption.<br />

Site<br />

Built into the facing of a cultivated<br />

field terrace wall, on a small property<br />

which grows olive trees.<br />

Ground plan<br />

Elliptical, 3 m along the longest axis.<br />

Roofing<br />

False dome.<br />

Facings<br />

Due to the honeycombed nature of<br />

most of the stone the terrace wall's<br />

facing is made of slightly dressed<br />

stone and has quite op<strong>en</strong> joints,<br />

although the voussoirs in the arch of<br />

the capelleta (small dome) have be<strong>en</strong><br />

worked a little more. The inside of the<br />

cistern has be<strong>en</strong> dug out of the rock<br />

and lined with Majorcan cem<strong>en</strong>t to<br />

prev<strong>en</strong>t water being lost, while the<br />

drystone masonry roof, with the stones<br />

laid on <strong>en</strong>d, prev<strong>en</strong>ts evaporation<br />

and allows filtration. The cistern is<br />

about 1.5 m deep.<br />

Op<strong>en</strong>ings<br />

The cistern's op<strong>en</strong>ing is a small gallery<br />

with an external portal which has<br />

a semicircular arch spanning 83 cm;<br />

the water can be reached through a<br />

smaller op<strong>en</strong>ing which has a ledge to<br />

stop people falling in.<br />

<strong>Materials</strong><br />

Limestone, <strong>pedra</strong> brescada (honeycombed<br />

stone).<br />

It has no accessory items due the<br />

simplicity of its construction and use.<br />
