Description<br />

A tool comprising an iron blade in the<br />

form of a triangular scoop clearly curved<br />

to the sides with steel at the<br />

point; this is fixed in its broader part to<br />

a wood<strong>en</strong> handle with which forms an<br />

acute angle. The traditional triangular<br />

hoe has a wood<strong>en</strong> handle fixed<br />

directly to the eye of the scoop and is<br />

held by small iron pieces (wedges).<br />

Size<br />

Handle 62.5 cm, triangular blade 33<br />

cm at the base and 33 cm high in traditional<br />

tools. Triangular hoes today,<br />

have a slightly longer handle and a<br />

smaller blade.<br />

Approximate weight<br />

1.7 kg.<br />

<strong>Materials</strong> of the parts<br />

Wood<strong>en</strong> handle (normally wild olive,<br />

Olea europaea) and steeled iron<br />

blade.<br />

Use<br />

It is used to remove soil and rubble<br />

wh<strong>en</strong> clearing a wall collapse and for<br />

filling two-handled baskets.<br />

Ways of using it<br />

This tool is used with two hands. The<br />

drystone mason faces the pile of<br />

material, places the basket slightly<br />

inclined betwe<strong>en</strong> his legs and, leaning<br />

on them, pulls the triangular hoe<br />

to pick up the earth or gravel and fill<br />

the basket.<br />
