CHEMICAL SNOW FALL<br />

Aim: Chemical Snow Fall.<br />

Requirement: Close container, Chinadish, Stones, Burner,<br />

Tripoid stand, Phthalic acid, Matchstick etc.<br />

Principle: It is based on sublimation process.<br />

Theory: Sublimation is <strong>the</strong> process in which solid<br />

substance directly changes into vapours. In this project<br />

phthalic acid is used.<br />

Chemical formula <strong>of</strong> phthalic acid is C H (COOH) and<br />

chemical reaction takes place in this process as indicated<br />

in <strong>the</strong> figure.<br />

Construction:<br />

Working: When we heat phthalic acid in chinadish it<br />

starts to change into vapours. When vapours <strong>of</strong> phthalic<br />

acid falling on stone placed in closed container, appear<br />

like snow.<br />

Application: (i) It is used to create artificial condition <strong>of</strong><br />

snow fall in those areas where it is not possible by nature.<br />

(ii) It is used for decoration purpose in parties and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

programmes.<br />
