COOL CHAMBERS
Materials: - For construction this, no experts are required, moreover
this chamber require only ordinary materials like bricks, sand,
bamboo, sack etc. This can be made on the earth. High level land
(place) is required where there is plenty of breezes available. There
should be roof above this cool chamber, which will prevent rain and
sun. Therefore, it should be made under an open shed.
Construction: - The rectangular chamber is made of two wall bricks.
7.5cm should be left between walls. This portion should be filled with
river sand. Before making the walls the bottom part of the chamber
should be leveled with sand and closely packed with one line bricks.
Bricks should be higher in size and they should be wet with water
before the construction. The length, breadth and height of the
chamber should be 165cm x 115cm x 67.5cm. The brick should be
joined with clay so that blocks should not fall down. Use of cement
should be avoided. The lid of the chamber should be made of thick
sacks with bamboo frames.
Working in this cool chamber is very simple. Before keeping
vegetables and fruits, the chamber should be cooled and cleaned with
bleaching powder or chlorine water. To cool the chamber the sand
between the brick walls should be wet with water. Water should be
poured very slowly. The temperature should be kept below the
surroundings. Wetting of sand should be done twice daily. Vegetable
can be kept fresh for 4 to 8 days. No water drops should be allowed to
fall on the vegetable. For that polythene can be kept over the
vegetables containers. Since water is poured into sand in between two
walls of bricks, there are pores in bricks which allow water to
percolate to the outer surface where evaporation of water takes place
producing a cooling effect in the chamber.
Advantages
· Alternative of Refrigerator and cold storage · Low cost materials
are required · No electricity is required · No experts are required
· Pollution free · Materials are eco – friendly · Better
marketability of fresh horticulture produces that ambient · Retain
nutritive value.
Areas of application
· Short term storage of fresh vegetables, fruits and flowers
· Growing of white button mushroom · Ripening of tomato and
banana · Plant propagation · Storage of processed fruit products.
