RAIN WATER HARVESTING
The common components of a rainwater harvesting
system are:
Catchment: Rooftops are the best among them because of
the large coefficient of run off generated from them and
there are less chances of contamination of water.
Conveyance: Conveyance system basically includes rain
gutters and down pipes which collects the rain water from
catchment to the storage tank.
Storage: Tanks should be covered to prevent mosquito
breeding, evaporation losses contamination and algal
growth. Leakage from tanks should be prevented.
Filter: A simple filter of gravel, sand and charcoal can be
made all of which are easily available.
Purification: Use Chlorine or UV light to purify the
collected rainwater for potable use.
Distribution: Before supplying for human consumption
the water should be filtered purified and kept in a PVC
tank connected to a tap for withdrawal.
Recharge structures: Rainwater may be charged into the
groundwater aquifers through dug wells, bore wells,
recharge trenches and recharge pits.
Benefits of Rainwater Harvesting: Rainwater harvesting
increases water security. It is the perfect solution to meet
water requirements especially in the areas which do not
have sufficient water resources.
