Mumbai, the National Capital Region, and Chennai, and much ahead <strong>of</strong> locations<br />

such as Pune and Kolkata. Modern services form 39% <strong>of</strong> the economic activity in<br />

Hyderabad, with transport accounting for another 19%. The real estate industry,<br />

which benefits from this, is also unusually diverse, with strong participation <strong>of</strong><br />

national players, in addition to regional firms. To complement these strengths in<br />

services, it has a manufacturing base in the surrounding Rangareddy district. It<br />

has been able to draw in talent from across the state and country, not just at the<br />

high end but across the range <strong>of</strong> economic activities. Hyderabad has been able to<br />

attract investors from across the country and indeed across the globe. In fact, a<br />

sixth <strong>of</strong> Telangana‟s GDP comes from Hyderabad. The pattern <strong>of</strong> Hyderabad‟s<br />

migration and investment reflects a growing increase in its cosmopolitan identity<br />

and social diversity. Hyderabad has also benefited from a number <strong>of</strong> public sector<br />

interventions at both the state and central level, in terms <strong>of</strong> institutions,<br />

investment and infrastructure. It is to be noted that a large number <strong>of</strong> Central<br />

institutions are Public Sector Companies/Units, National Institutes, Civil and<br />

Military Research and Development Organisations, and Defence Forces<br />

Institutions.<br />

6.22.03 The data obtained from CEPT, Ahmedabad, put the population <strong>of</strong><br />

Hyderabad Metropolitan region in 2001 at 75,86,813 and in 2011 it is projected<br />

to be 1,03,18,302. As mentioned earlier, information obtained from the State<br />

Government indicates that over 8 lakh people leave Hyderabad for coastal<br />

Andhra and Rayalaseema during the Sankranti festival every year. The in-<br />

migration from within and outside the state indicates that the present character<br />

<strong>of</strong> the city is quite different from that inherited from the Nizam period or what it<br />

was even three decades ago. Migrants from the three regions, especially from<br />

coastal Andhra, have contributed substantially to the economic growth <strong>of</strong> the city<br />

and continue to hold a stake in important businesses. The recent pr<strong>of</strong>ile <strong>of</strong><br />

migrants has changed once again, with many now being from other parts <strong>of</strong> the<br />

country. Circulatory or temporary migrants to the city from other regions <strong>of</strong> the<br />

state, especially from among the poorer sections <strong>of</strong> the population also find work<br />
