They require UV excitation, which results in substantial<br />

amounts <strong>of</strong> aut<strong>of</strong>luorescence from cells. The excitation<br />

spectra show only minor changes in shape upon binding <strong>of</strong><br />

Na + and K + to these probes (Figure 19.47). Apparently, the<br />

charge densities <strong>of</strong> these singly charged cations are not suf-<br />
