Distinguished Service Awards<br />

Wilbur Wiles<br />
Two pioneers in cougar research were presented<br />
with achievement awards at <strong>the</strong> 9th <strong>Mountain</strong><br />
<strong>Lion</strong> <strong>Workshop</strong> in Sun Valley Idaho, May 5-8th<br />
2008.<br />
Dr. Maurice Hornocker was presented with a<br />
Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
cougar research community, including <strong>Mountain</strong><br />
<strong>Lion</strong> <strong>Workshop</strong> participants, Hornocker Institute<br />
employees, <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Idaho Taylor Ranch<br />
Field Station, <strong>the</strong> Idaho Department <strong>of</strong> Fish &<br />
Game, <strong>the</strong> DeVlieg Foundation, and several <strong>of</strong><br />
Hornocker’s University <strong>of</strong> Idaho graduate students.<br />
Dr. Hornocker served as leader <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Idaho<br />
Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit for 17<br />
years. He also founded two research institutes:<br />
<strong>the</strong> Hornocker Wildlife Institute and <strong>the</strong> Selway<br />
Institute. Dr. Hornocker’s research findings<br />
were instrumental in transferring <strong>the</strong> status <strong>of</strong><br />
mountain lions in Idaho from bounty animal to a<br />
respected big game species. Dr. Hornocker<br />
conducted <strong>the</strong> first major mountain lion research<br />
project, stating in 1968 in Big Creek, Idaho.<br />
Dr. Hornocker credits a great deal <strong>of</strong> his research<br />
success to his houndsman and research assistant,<br />
Wilbur Wiles. Wiles worked with Hornocker and<br />
graduate students from 1964 through 1973.<br />
Although Wiles was unable to attend <strong>the</strong><br />
workshop, he was acknowledged during <strong>the</strong><br />
workshop banquet and later given <strong>the</strong> Idaho<br />
Conservation Award in a small ceremony at his<br />
home in Big Creek, Idaho on July 15 th , 2008.<br />
