La restauration des films s’impose
lorsqu’apparaissent les signes annonciateurs de la
décomposition de la pellicule. Si l’on a longtemps
cru que seule se dégradait la pellicule nitrate et
que la pellicule acétate résisterait au temps, il a
malheureusement fallu déchanter. Depuis une
dizaine d’années, en effet, les archivistes ont
constaté que la pellicule acétate se décompose
elle aussi, présentant alors ce que, dans le jargon
des cinémathèques, on appelle « le syndrome du
vinaigre ».

Trop souvent, le cinéma a été considéré
exclusivement sous son aspect purement visuel. En
outre, l’importance des études consacrées au son
ainsi qu’au rapport entre la recherche scientifique
et le travail des archives ont rarement fait l’objet
de formations européennes. La rencontre dédiée
au son comprendra deux chapitres : l’un portant
sur les aspects technologiques et historiques de la
donnée sonore, l’autre sur les problèmes
esthétiques.

Film restoration becomes imperative as soon as
the first alarming signs of decomposition appear.
Although it was a long-held belief that only
nitrate film disintegrated whereas acetate resisted
the attacks of time we know now that unfortunately
this is not so. Indeed, for the past ten years
or so archivists have noted that acetate film also
decomposes, presenting what in archival terms is
known as “the vinegar syndrome”.

All too often cinema has been studied exclusively
as a visual art form. Indeed, only very few
European colloquia seem to have focused on the
importance of studies devoted to sound or the
relationship between scientific research and
archive work. The October Seminar devoted to the
study of sound comprises two chapters : one on
the technological and historic aspects of sound
and a second on the esthetical problems involved
in sound restoration.
