hour calculation, but this would be too much detail for the present
survey.
The national collection has been divided over the following groups
(in hours)
NAA Film Regional Other
Museum Collections Collections
Film 41,300 34,000 600 35,400
Video 126,800 0 1,200 90,300
Sound 370,000 0 1,000 132,600
Total 538,100 34,000 2,800 258,300
Divided over the categories A through C the collection looks as follows
(in hours)
Category A Category B Category C
Film 3,583 27,920 32,062
Video 5,067 42,074 97,463
Sound 17,111 157,971 243,067
Total 25,761 227,965 372,662
It will be noticed that there is a difference between the grand totals of
the first summary (around 830,000 hours) and the second one
(around 626,000 hours). This is due to the absence of the Film
Museum in the second summary and the exclusion of irrelevant
materials in category D.
NAA puts 3% of its collections in A, 30% in B, around 44% in C and
the remainder in D. Out of its 418,000 hours 20% has to be preserved.
The Film Museum has indicated that it will have preserved 26% of
its nitrate film collection by the end of 2000, when around 1,7 million
meters remain to be preserved at the cost of DFL 26,000,000.
Out of the acetate film collection of 45 million meters 1,6 million
meters has to be preserved at DFL 28,000,000. It also earmarks DFL
7,000,000 for cataloguing and digitalisation.
The regional audiovisual archives put 7% of their film collections, 1%
of their video collections and nothing of their recorded sound collections
in A; 47% of the films, 10% of the videos and 16% of the
sound recordings are in B; 46% of the films, 89% of the videos and
84% of the sound recordings are in C or D. Small wonder then that if
78% of the films need to be preserved, virtually all sound recordings
(98%) have to be preserved as well as a relatively modest 65% of the
video recordings.
The rather diverse group labelled ‘Other Collections’ holds i.a.
important national and regional broadcasting archives. Here, 6% of
the films, 3% of the videos and 5% of the sound recordings are in A,
while 41% of the films, 23% of the videos and 36% of the sound
