Mona Mitropoulos
( † 1999)
Theodoros Adamopoulos, Maria Comninos
Our beloved President, Mona
Mitropoulos, is not any more with
us. She died on November 19th,
after a serious illness which kept
her away from her beloved archive.
Mona Mitropoulos was born in
Athens and she made her first
appearance in the Greek litterature
in the early post-war period with
her book “The House with the
Skylark”. Then, followed two other
books: “Apassionata” and
“Vacations” which won the State
Prize for litterature in 1966. With
these novels Mona Mitropoulos
won a place amongst new Greek
novelists who renewed the postwar
litterature.
In 1962 her play “The Representatives” was staged in Paris. In the
period, around 1974, after the return of democracy in Greece she
published a collection of poems, “From Yellow to Nostos”, which
were written during the period of dictatorship. In 1974, her play
“The Acrobats” was staged by the “New Scene” of the National Greek
Theater. Her last novel “Hello Madame History” was published in the
80s.
Mona Mitropoulos whith her sister Aglaya and some other film critics
formed the Athen Cine Club in 1950 which became the basis for
the formation of the Greek Film Archive in 1963. Mona, together
with her sister Aglaya, was the moving force of these difficult years,
in the struggle to preserve films and promote good cinema in Greece.
After Aglaya’s death, Mona was elected President of the Board and
finally she was elected Honorary President of the Greek Film
Archive.
