four inserted pieces <strong>of</strong> regular-size white paper printed on<br />

both sides. Members [women receiving credit]: 327,484, up<br />

<strong>from</strong> 288,499 the previous year... Average loan size: $96,<br />

down <strong>from</strong> $100 the previous year.<br />

In fiscal year 2004 total unrestricted operating revenue<br />

<strong>and</strong> support was $3.956 million, down 5.2% <strong>from</strong> $4.170<br />

million in 2003.<br />

Of revenues, 68% came <strong>from</strong> general public donations<br />

<strong>and</strong> bequests, 20% <strong>from</strong> the U.S. Agency <strong>for</strong> International<br />

Development (USAID), <strong>and</strong> 12% <strong>from</strong> program <strong>and</strong> other<br />

income.<br />

For the 2nd year in a row, any comparative statistics<br />

(except <strong>for</strong> income <strong>and</strong> expenses) contained in this report<br />

are not readily apparent–disappointing. Revenue is also<br />

unclear (see p. 6-7). We are told that, <strong>of</strong> expenses:<br />

Administration 11%. Fund raising 12%. “In FY05, it<br />

supported the self-help ef<strong>for</strong>ts <strong>of</strong> more than 370,000 women<br />

<strong>and</strong> their families in 15 countries” (p. 3).<br />

In the section titled “Fulfilling the promise” (p. 8-10),<br />

donors are listed <strong>and</strong> ranked into categories by amount<br />

donated. The top category is $100,000+ in which 3 donors<br />

are listed. These include: GlaxoSmithKline (African<br />

Malaria Partnership). U.S. Agency <strong>for</strong> International<br />

Development (USAID).<br />

On the inside rear cover <strong>of</strong> this oversized, portfoliostyle<br />

report is a “pocket” which holds three glossy full-color<br />

thick inserted pieces <strong>of</strong> regular size paper printed on both<br />

sides. But no statistics.<br />
