necessary, students are referred to other medical specialists and/or<br />

hospitals in the Melbourne area.<br />

All students must provide a completed medical history report, certified<br />

by the signature <strong>of</strong> the student’s health care provider, including<br />

pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> the required immunizations, whether or not they plan to<br />

use the health center. Exemptions to the immunization policy shall<br />

apply only if a student submits a written statement signed by their<br />

church, hall, temple or spiritual leader that the administration <strong>of</strong><br />

immunizing agents conflicts with their religious tenets or practices,<br />

or a licensed physician submits written certification that the student<br />

should be exempt from the required immunization, based on valid<br />

clinical reasoning or evidence demonstrating the need for an exemption,<br />

and indicating when the student would no longer be exempted<br />

from immunization. If the medical exemption no longer applies, the<br />

student must comply with the policy within 30 days. Any medical<br />

exemption will be reviewed by the university’s medical director.<br />

The Information <strong>Technology</strong> department provides services to the<br />

campus community in the areas <strong>of</strong> email accounts, discounted s<strong>of</strong>tware<br />

and computers, computing facilities, instructional technologies, network<br />

services, technology support and telephone services. Resources<br />

include a variety <strong>of</strong> multimedia classrooms, the Applied Computing<br />

Center, the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence and the<br />

F.W. Olin Production Center. Information on both services and facilities<br />

is available at http://it.fit.edu or by email to techsupport@fit.edu.<br />

All residence halls and on-campus apartments are wired for highspeed<br />

Internet access. Wireless Internet access is available to the<br />

vast majority <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Florida</strong> Tech campus and classrooms. Students<br />

are assigned email accounts upon admission.<br />

The Office <strong>of</strong> International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS)<br />

provides support and guidance to international students and scholars<br />

at <strong>Florida</strong> Tech. The ISSS staff assists students in meeting their educational<br />

goals and objectives, and in interpreting U.S. Citizenship and<br />

Immigration Services (USCIS) regulations. Services include assisting<br />

F, J and H visa holders with travel signatures, new I-20s, international<br />

student orientation, letters to social security and visa extensions, as<br />

well as other immigration matters (see “Admission Guidelines” for<br />

international students in the Academic Overview section).<br />

ISSS also <strong>of</strong>fers various programs to assist students in adjusting to<br />

life in the United States and at <strong>Florida</strong> Tech. These programs include<br />

International Student and Scholar Orientation, the International<br />

Friendship Program and seminars on such topics as employment and<br />

immigration issues.<br />

It is mandatory that all international students check in with the Office<br />

<strong>of</strong> International Student and Scholar Services with their passports<br />

and entry documents (I-20, or DS 2019 and I-94 card) upon arrival<br />

on campus.<br />

The Military Science Program has coordinators available to assist<br />

any qualified student to achieve a Senior Army ROTC scholarship. More<br />

information about the <strong>Florida</strong> Tech military science program can be<br />

found under the College <strong>of</strong> Psychology and Liberal Arts in the Degree<br />

Programs section.<br />

The Office <strong>of</strong> Online Learning creates and supports online, highquality<br />

educational experiences for a diverse student population. As an<br />

innovative administrative department the <strong>of</strong>fice provides technology,<br />

support and services that allow students, faculty and staff to pursue their<br />

educational and pr<strong>of</strong>essional goals, contribute to the global workforce<br />

and serve their communities.<br />

8 <strong>Florida</strong> Tech <strong>2013–2014</strong><br />

<strong>Florida</strong> Tech’s Residence Life Program is committed to supporting<br />

and enhancing the academic mission <strong>of</strong> the university. Residence life<br />

staff work with resident students and various campus departments<br />

to ensure clean, comfortable and well- maintained residence halls.<br />

The residence life program includes all <strong>of</strong> the student life aspects <strong>of</strong><br />

residential facilities and the formulation and interpretation <strong>of</strong> all policies<br />

and procedures affecting students in residence. It also includes<br />

all counseling and student conduct concerns, programming and community<br />

development. The emphasis is on providing living and learning<br />

experiences from which people can grow. The major role <strong>of</strong> the<br />

program is to support and enhance the development <strong>of</strong> the personal<br />

as well as academic life <strong>of</strong> students while they are at <strong>Florida</strong> Tech.<br />

The Office <strong>of</strong> Veterans Affairs for Melbourne campus students is<br />

located in the Office <strong>of</strong> the Registrar and has a coordinator available to<br />

assist veterans and their dependents with both university and VA-related<br />

matters. In addition to providing information regarding VA education<br />

benefits, tutorial assistance and employment services, the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong>fers<br />

individual counseling and referrals. <strong>Florida</strong> Tech University Online<br />

students should contact the military veterans affairs coordinator at<br />

(321) 674-8204 or by email to uava@fit.edu, and extended studies<br />

students, the site director at their location.<br />

Co-Curricular Activities<br />

<strong>Florida</strong> Tech hosts more than 100 student organizations for students<br />

to join and hold positions <strong>of</strong> leadership. Organizations represent the<br />

varied interests <strong>of</strong> <strong>Florida</strong> Tech’s students. These interests include<br />

student governance, social programming, cultural education and<br />

appreciation, fraternity/sorority membership, political and religious<br />

development, dance, music and theater performance, academic and<br />

honor organization involvement, science fiction/historical role-playing<br />

and participation in athletics club team sports.<br />

New campus organizations are formed annually based on student interest.<br />

All organizations are supported by the Office <strong>of</strong> Student Activities<br />

and a faculty/administrative advisor. Organizations are provided leadership<br />

training and recognition throughout the year.<br />

The university provides varsity athletics, and intramural and recreational<br />

activities for students. <strong>Florida</strong> Tech is a member <strong>of</strong> the National<br />

Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II and competes<br />

in the Sunshine State Conference. Men’s sports include baseball,<br />

basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, swimming,<br />

track and field, and tennis. Women’s sports include basketball, cross<br />

country, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, s<strong>of</strong>tball, swimming, track and<br />

field, tennis and volleyball. The new Panther football team is slated to<br />

begin competition in 2013 as a member <strong>of</strong> the Gulf South Conference.<br />

Panther teams have earned regional titles in baseball, men’s and women’s<br />

rowing, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s basketball, and Sunshine<br />

State Conference championships in men’s and women’s soccer, men’s<br />

and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s basketball, and women’s<br />

rowing. In addition to competing at the regional level, the Panthers hold<br />

team national championships in men’s soccer and rowing and an individual<br />

championship in women’s golf.<br />

Intramural team sports include flag football, s<strong>of</strong>tball, volleyball,<br />

cricket, basketball, soccer and inner tube water polo. Individual<br />

intramural sports are tennis, running, golf, weightlifting, racquetball<br />

and badminton.
