Degree Requirements<br />

The MBA degree is conferred on a student who has successfully<br />

completed 36 credit hours <strong>of</strong> required and elective courses as listed<br />

on the student’s approved Graduate Program Plan.<br />

Curriculum<br />

Foundation Courses<br />

The following foundation courses are required <strong>of</strong> all MBA students<br />

enrolled in their first semester at <strong>Florida</strong> Tech:<br />

BUS 5601 Essentials <strong>of</strong> Business Development 1* .................................. 3<br />

This two-course core sequence familiarizes students with the principle<br />

concepts and tools used in the main foundation disciplines <strong>of</strong> business,<br />

including accounting, financial statement analysis, economics,<br />

marketing, management principles, finance, business law and statistics.<br />

Students also learn how the various disciplines are integrated by<br />

completing two substantive projects. These courses can be completed<br />

in one semester and are designed not only for individuals with undergraduate<br />

degrees in business, but also for students with undergraduate<br />

degrees in other fields. Full-time international students must register<br />

for at least one additional course. For more information, international<br />

students should consult with the associate dean <strong>of</strong> academics.<br />

*<strong>Florida</strong> Tech Melbourne campus fast track students who are majoring in business<br />

can substitute an additional graduate level business elective for BUS 5601.<br />

Core Courses<br />

The MBA degree requires completion <strong>of</strong> a common set <strong>of</strong> six core<br />

courses including the capstone course in strategic management. These<br />

required courses are designed to prepare the student to respond to<br />

the complex business decisions that arise in today’s rapidly changing<br />

environment. As such, these courses incorporate either case studies or<br />

projects that require extensive qualitative and/or quantitative analysis.<br />

Electives<br />

In addition to the eight required courses, students are also required<br />

to take four elective courses (three credit hours each). Electives can<br />

be taken with the faculty advisor’s approval from other graduate-level<br />

<strong>of</strong>ferings in the Nathan M. Bisk College <strong>of</strong> Business or other colleges<br />

or academic units.<br />

Accounting Emphasis for CPA Certification<br />

Melbourne campus students with a bachelor’s degree in accounting<br />

(or the equivalent) may elect to take four courses from the following<br />

list to complete the MBA degree and achieve an accounting emphasis<br />

directed toward sitting for the Uniform Certified Public Accountant<br />

(CPA) Examination. These courses will substitute for Managerial<br />

Accounting (BUS 5431) and three MBA electives.<br />

The Master <strong>of</strong> Business Administration – Accounting degree program<br />

may be completed in two years or less and provides the high-level<br />

knowledge and range <strong>of</strong> skills to meet the challenges <strong>of</strong> today’s complex<br />

global business.<br />

Rooted in the case method approach, this intensive MBA program<br />

<strong>of</strong>fers a uniquely collaborative, hands-on education. The program<br />

covers accounting policy.<br />

The two-course sequence Essentials <strong>of</strong> Business Development 1<br />

and 2 (BUS 5601 and BUS 5602) culminates in a fully integrated<br />

business plan. Each student has the opportunity to choose a business<br />

and progressively bring it to fruition through critical business concepts<br />

from statistics and managerial economics to marketing.<br />

Students actively engage in case study analysis and exercise leadership<br />

and teamwork skills. The program combines academic principles with<br />

practical, real-world applications to result in a solid business foundation.<br />
