MGT 5101 LEADERSHIP THEORY AND EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT<br />

(3 credits). Introduces and examines historical development <strong>of</strong> leadership theory<br />

and supporting research. Considers past and contemporary theory in self-analysis<br />

by students to define their own leadership styles. Prerequisites: MGT 5013.<br />

MGT 5105 INTERPERSONAL RELATIONS AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION<br />

(3 credits). Covers interpersonal behavior in two-person relationships, emphasizing<br />

interpersonal communication and conflict resolution. Also covers group processes,<br />

development and how group norms and culture influence interpersonal relationships.<br />

Prerequisites: MGT 5013.<br />

MGT 5106 ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATION (3 credits). Includes basic<br />

communication theory and the effects <strong>of</strong> communication on human behavior and<br />

organizational effectiveness. Provides a basic understanding <strong>of</strong> organizational<br />

communication theory. Uses case studies and experiential exercises to improve<br />

communications skills.<br />

MGT 5112 SEMINAR IN CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN HUMAN RESOURCES<br />

MANAGEMENT (3 credits). Surveys significant socio-political, legal, technological<br />

and economic issues in contemporary organizations and member work-life quality.<br />

Uses current and personal experiences within organizations. May serve as the capstone<br />

for certain majors. Prerequisites: MGT 5033.<br />

MGT 5113 PROJECT MANAGEMENT FOR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY<br />

(3 credits). Examines the components and management process <strong>of</strong> complex<br />

projects from the information technology (IT) perspective. Introduces project<br />

management tools and techniques useful to the IT pr<strong>of</strong>essional. Studies the<br />

formation and leadership requirements <strong>of</strong> project management.<br />

MGT 5114 INTRODUCTION TO INFORMATION SECURITY MANAGEMENT<br />

(3 credits). Examines the fundamental principles <strong>of</strong> computer security as applied<br />

to information technology (IT). Covers foundations, psychology, prevention, detection,<br />

human factors, technical considerations, management processes and future<br />

considerations for the security <strong>of</strong> information technology.<br />

MGT 5115 GLOBAL INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT<br />

(3 credits). Covers theory, development and impacts <strong>of</strong> national and international<br />

policy on information technology (IT). Explores how frequent shifts in public policy<br />

require IT businesses to adjust rapidly to adhere to regulations. Requires development<br />

<strong>of</strong> sophisticated strategies including new technologies, global transfer and<br />

analysis to be able to adapt to the changing environment.<br />

MGT 5119 ACCOUNTING FOR NONPROFIT ENTITIES (3 credits). Covers<br />

accounting systems employed by universities and other nonpr<strong>of</strong>it entities. Includes<br />

fund accounting used by municipalities and county, state and federal government,<br />

and financial management cycle from planning through evaluation. Prerequisites:<br />

MGT 5001.<br />

MGT 5131 PRODUCTIVITY MEASUREMENT AND IMPROVEMENT<br />

(3 credits). Covers the productivity and quality improvement process, organizing<br />

for successful implementation <strong>of</strong> the Deming philosophy, organizational structure<br />

and implementing teams. Includes productivity, pr<strong>of</strong>it and quality, organizational<br />

anxieties, measurement problems, partial/total firm productivity, JIT and TQM.<br />

Prerequisites: MGT 5006.<br />

MGT 5132 BASIC ECONOMICS (3 credits). Covers market forces <strong>of</strong> supply and<br />

demand, concept <strong>of</strong> utility, firm and production, production function and costs<br />

<strong>of</strong> production, and various market structures. Introduces macroeconomics, the<br />

issues <strong>of</strong> aggregation, circular flow model, monetary sector and the government<br />

stabilization policies.<br />

MGT 5133 ADVANCED ANALYTICAL METHODS FOR MANAGEMENT<br />

(3 credits). Quantitative models using management science, operations research<br />

and decision science techniques with business applications. Includes linear and<br />

integer linear programming (graphical and simplex methods), inventory models,<br />

queuing models and Markov processes. Prerequisites: MGT 5006, MGT 5022.<br />

MGT 5134 COMMERCIAL ENTERPRISE IN SPACE (3 credits). Includes economic<br />

considerations <strong>of</strong> space processing and Earth resources observation; history<br />

<strong>of</strong> in-space experimentation and developments; definition <strong>of</strong> Earth’s orbital environment<br />

and its attendant commercial advantages; launch operations and landing/<br />

retrieval; financial/pr<strong>of</strong>it considerations <strong>of</strong> operating in space; and current commercial<br />

space opportunities and risks.<br />

MGT 5136 INVESTMENT ANALYSIS (3 credits). Includes portfolio design, analysis<br />

and management including the Markowitz approach to portfolio design; the<br />

simplified model <strong>of</strong> William Sharpe; and the capital asset pricing model. Covers<br />

the management <strong>of</strong> bond and equity portfolios, portfolio optimization, arbitrage<br />

and hedging techniques. Prerequisites: MGT 5002, MGT 5006.<br />

MGT 5137 THE MANAGEMENT OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY<br />

(3 credits). Explores relationships between technology, innovation, management<br />

and business operations. Studies technology strategy in terms <strong>of</strong> the discoveryproduct-market<br />

path. Relates the management functions <strong>of</strong> planning, organizing<br />

and controlling to life cycles. Uses case studies.<br />

MGT 5138 BUSINESS ETHICS (3 credits). Covers concepts <strong>of</strong> moral philosophy<br />

and their relevance to decision making, and applies this understanding in a wide<br />

variety <strong>of</strong> practical management settings. Extensively uses case analyses.<br />

MGT 5140 INTERNATIONAL FINANCE (3 credits). Covers international financial<br />

systems and methods needed to adapt to the international setting. Includes<br />

international monetary system, foreign exchange markets and international trade,<br />

international accounting and taxation, foreign direct financial investment, international<br />

capital markets, multinational capital budgeting, exchange exposure and<br />

risk management. Prerequisites: MGT 5002.<br />

MGT 5141 IMPLEMENTING STATISTICAL PROCESS CONTROL (3 credits).<br />

Implements an overall SPC program, emphasizing how to manage a process throughout<br />

the entire organization with the aid <strong>of</strong> tools and methods for the improvement<br />

<strong>of</strong> quality. Includes how to target processes for SPC, conduct process capability<br />

studies and maintain ongoing process control. Prerequisites: MGT 5006.<br />

MGT 5142 BUSINESS, GOVERNMENT AND PUBLIC POLICY (3 credits).<br />

Covers the legal basis <strong>of</strong> the relationship <strong>of</strong> business and government, dimensions<br />

<strong>of</strong> federal regulation <strong>of</strong> business through Congressional action, administrative oversight<br />

by executive department agencies, regulatory power <strong>of</strong> independent agencies<br />

(Federal Reserve, SEC and FTC) and importance <strong>of</strong> political action committees<br />

in the influencing <strong>of</strong> public policy.<br />

MGT 5145 TECHNOLOGY AND BUSINESS STRATEGY (3 credits). Focuses on<br />

the process <strong>of</strong> developing a technology strategy and integrating it with business<br />

strategy. Involves technology situation analysis, technology portfolio development,<br />

technology and corporate strategy integration and establishing technology investment<br />

priorities. Extensively uses case studies.<br />

MGT 5146 MANAGEMENT OF INNOVATION (3 credits). Considers innovation<br />

in a historical context, organizing organizational culture and innovation, managing<br />

cross-functional teams, venturing and organization learning, intra- and entrepreneurship,<br />

managing R&D resources, executive leadership and the management<br />

<strong>of</strong> innovation and change, and designing innovative organizations. Prerequisites:<br />

MGT 5013.<br />

MGT 5148 DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF EXPERIMENTS (3 credits). Covers productivity<br />

measurement and improvement and quantitative methods used in the management<br />

<strong>of</strong> technology. Includes analysis <strong>of</strong> means, multifactor analysis <strong>of</strong> variance,<br />

factorial experiments and orthogonal arrays, including personal computer s<strong>of</strong>tware<br />

applications for the design and analysis <strong>of</strong> experiments. Prerequisites: MGT 5007.<br />

MGT 5149 ECONOMICS FOR BUSINESS (3 credits). Covers advanced economics<br />

including economic modeling and forecasting; economic efficiency and allocation<br />

<strong>of</strong> resources in product markets and the public sector; macroeconomics; and open<br />

economy, foreign exchange and international trade. Prerequisites: MGT 5006,<br />

MGT 5022, MGT 5132.<br />

MGT 5150 MANAGEMENT OF SOFTWARE SYSTEMS (3 credits). Explores management’s<br />

consideration <strong>of</strong> functional requirement specifications, design, development,<br />

implementation and maintenance <strong>of</strong> computer-based s<strong>of</strong>tware systems that<br />

provide information technology-related services to organizations. (Requirement:<br />

Prerequisite course or equivalent.) Prerequisites: MGT 5014.<br />

MGT 5151 DATABASE SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT (3 credits). Investigates<br />

how database management system techniques are used to design, develop, implement<br />

and maintain modern database applications in organizations. (Requirement:<br />

MGT 5152 COMPUTER SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATION (3 credits). Covers a chief<br />

information <strong>of</strong>ficer’s multiple role in management <strong>of</strong> computer-based resources,<br />

both centralized and networked data center operations with wide-area networks<br />

and local-area networks; computer-based systems development/maintenance/security.<br />

(Requirement: Prerequisite course or equivalent.) Prerequisites: MGT 5014.<br />

MGT 5153 TELECOMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT (3 credits).<br />

Explores the legal and technical operation environment <strong>of</strong> telecommunications in<br />

organizations. Assesses organizational ramifications <strong>of</strong> government telecommunications<br />

laws, policies and deregulatory activities. (Requirement: Prerequisite course<br />

or equivalent.) Prerequisites: MGT 5014.
