HUM 3585 SPECIAL TOPICS IN PHILOSOPHY (3 credits). Studies a particular<br />

period, movement, or individual philosopher or religious figure. Topics announced<br />

prior to registration. (HU) Prerequisites: HUM 2051.<br />

HUM 4100 SENIOR CAPSTONE PROJECT (3 credits). A project consisting <strong>of</strong><br />

original research that will result in a substantial written work about a significant<br />

issue in the humanities. Serves as the culmination <strong>of</strong> a humanities major’s undergraduate<br />

program. (Requirement: Senior standing and department head approval.)<br />

HUM 4150 INDEPENDENT STUDY (3 credits). Offers the humanities major an<br />

opportunity to study a particular period, movement, genre or individual under the<br />

supervision <strong>of</strong> a faculty member. (Requirement: Department head approval.) (HU)<br />

Prerequisites: HUM 2051.<br />

HUM 4510 RECENT ISSUES IN LOGIC (3 credits). Introduces the many competing<br />

systems <strong>of</strong> logic recently developed and advocated. Also addresses the debate<br />

inspired by logical pluralism. (Requirement: Prerequisite course or instructor<br />

approval.) Prerequisites: ECE 1551 or HUM 2510.<br />

HUM 5510 RECENT ISSUES IN LOGIC (3 credits). Introduces non-classical<br />

systems including modal, intuitionistic, many-valued, fuzzy, paraconsistent and<br />

non-monotonic logics. Also addresses applications for these logics and the logical<br />

pluralism debate. Prerequisites: HUM 2510.<br />

INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDY<br />

IDS 1010 COMMUNITY SERVICE (1 credit). Fosters the development <strong>of</strong> selfreflective,<br />

culturally aware and responsible community participants through a<br />

community service volunteer experience. Requires reflective writing and discussions,<br />

and assigned readings.<br />

INTERDISCIPLINARY SCIENCE<br />

ISC 1162 SURVEY OF HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY (3 credits).<br />

Surveys the structure and function <strong>of</strong> the human body. Emphasizes the human<br />

body as an integrated system. Includes basic principles and concepts related to<br />

the structure <strong>of</strong> biological molecules, cells, tissues and organs, and the systems <strong>of</strong><br />

the human body. Also includes in-class practicum and online components as part<br />

<strong>of</strong> the course. Not recommended for students interested in health pr<strong>of</strong>essions.<br />

ISC 1500 INTRODUCTION TO SUSTAINABILITY (3 credits). Uses lectures,<br />

reading and discussions to explore the biological, environmental, economic, technological,<br />

humanistic and social science aspects <strong>of</strong> sustainable resource use and<br />

development.<br />

ISC 2501 SCIENTIFIC DIVING TECHNIQUES AND CERTIFICATION<br />

(3 credits). Provides training in underwater research techniques and certification<br />

by American Academy <strong>of</strong> Underwater Sciences upon completion. Includes health<br />

and safety certifications required by AAUS, lectures and 12 science training dives.<br />

(Requirements: Prerequisite course or Basic Open Water Dive certification and<br />

AAUS-approved medical examination.) Prerequisites: PED 1154.<br />

ISC 4000 APPLIED SUSTAINABILITY (3 credits). Requires the design, production<br />

and presentation <strong>of</strong> an individual or group project on improving the sustainable<br />

operation <strong>of</strong> some aspect <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Florida</strong> Tech main campus, <strong>Florida</strong> Tech satellite<br />

location or another approved location. (Requirement: Permission <strong>of</strong> the instructor.)<br />

Prerequisites: ISC 1500.<br />

ISC 5016 PRESENTING SCIENCE (3 credits). Introduces the principles and<br />

practices <strong>of</strong> presenting research findings. Focuses on effective methods <strong>of</strong> communicating<br />

scientific and technological discoveries in readily understandable and<br />

useful ways. Emphasizes techniques for communicating complex scientific principles<br />

and research outcomes to the general public.<br />

ISC 5200 PROFESSIONAL INTERDISCIPLINARY SCIENCE MASTER’S<br />

SEMINAR (1 credit). Exposes students to a broad range <strong>of</strong> topics from STEM,<br />

business, government and nonpr<strong>of</strong>it sectors. Discusses the challenges <strong>of</strong> these<br />

topics during weekly informational seminars. Includes possible report presentations<br />

<strong>of</strong> student internship and research projects from groups/teams. (Requirement:<br />

Program chair approval.)<br />

ISC 5899 FINAL SEMESTER THESIS (0-2 credits). Variable registration for thesis<br />

completion after satisfaction <strong>of</strong> minimum registration requirements. (Requirements:<br />

Accepted petition to graduate and approval <strong>of</strong> Office <strong>of</strong> Graduate Programs.)<br />

ISC 5999 THESIS (3-6 credits). Research and preparation <strong>of</strong> a thesis under the<br />

direction <strong>of</strong> a member <strong>of</strong> the graduate faculty. A maximum <strong>of</strong> six credit hours<br />

may be applied toward the master’s degree requirements. (Requirement: Thesis<br />

supervisor approval.)<br />

LNG 1601 ELEMENTARY ITALIAN 1 (3 credits). Introduces the four basic language<br />

LNG 1701 ELEMENTARY CHINESE LANGUAGE AND CULTURE 1 (3 credits).<br />

Introduces Chinese language (Mandarin/Putonghua) and culture. Includes basic<br />

pronunciation (syllable and tones) and the writing system (radicals and strokes).<br />

Develops listening, speaking, reading and writing skills for the beginner. Covers<br />

approximately 300 Chinese characters. Also introduces the social and cultural<br />

background <strong>of</strong> the language. (HU/SS)<br />

LNG 1702 ELEMENTARY CHINESE LANGUAGE AND CULTURE 2 (3 credits).<br />

Continues LNG 1701. Provides deeper understanding <strong>of</strong> Chinese language and<br />

culture. Includes constructing terms and phrases from basic characters, expanding<br />

vocabulary, understanding grammar and increasing conversational ability, developing<br />

reading skills, and writing not only correct but also beautiful characters in the<br />

language. (HU/SS) Prerequisites: LNG 1701.<br />

LNG 2101 INTERMEDIATE FRENCH 1 (3 credits). Reviews French grammar,<br />

emphasizing conversation and reading assignments from literature and culture at<br />

the intermediate level. Native speakers may not take this course. (Requirement:<br />

Two years <strong>of</strong> high school French or prerequisite course.) (HU/SS) Prerequisites:<br />

LNG 1102.<br />

LNG 2102 INTERMEDIATE FRENCH 2 (3 credits). Reviews French grammar,<br />

LNG 2201 INTERMEDIATE GERMAN 1 (3 credits). Reviews German grammar,<br />

LNG 3085 SPECIAL TOPICS IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE LITERATURE<br />

(3 credits). An advanced study <strong>of</strong> a particular author, a group <strong>of</strong> authors, a historical<br />

literary movement or a literary theme or genre in the original foreign language. Topics<br />

announced prior to registration. (HU/SS) Prerequisites: LNG 2102 or LNG 2302.
