HUM 2226 SURVEY OF WORLD LITERATURE 2 (3 credits). Surveys world literature<br />
through 20th-century short stories drawn from a wide variety <strong>of</strong> languages<br />
and cultures. Topics include colonization, cultural identity, alienation, gender roles,<br />
family life and social class. (HU) (Requirement: Must be enrolled in <strong>Florida</strong> Tech<br />
University Online.) Prerequisites: COM 1102.<br />
HUM 2250 LITERATURE: VOICE AND VISION (3 credits). A close reading<br />
and interpretation <strong>of</strong> texts representing the major genres <strong>of</strong> literature: short story,<br />

HUM 2331 AMERICAN HISTORY: PRE-COLUMBIAN TO CIVIL WAR<br />
ERA (3 credits). Surveys some <strong>of</strong> the basic problems in U.S. history through the<br />
Civil War era. Emphasizes origins, social characteristics and competing cultural<br />

HUM 2332 AMERICAN HISTORY: FROM RECONSTRUCTION TO THE<br />
PRESENT (3 credits). Examines the major ideas, ideals and events that have determined<br />
the American experience in the 19th and 20th centuries. (HU/SS) Prerequisites:<br />

HUM 2385 SPECIAL TOPICS IN WORLD HISTORY (3 credits). Examines cultural,<br />
geographical and philosophical issues in world history. Topics announced<br />

HUM 2401 INTRODUCTION TO LAW (3 credits). Introduces the basics <strong>of</strong> the<br />
U.S. legal system. Explores the U.S. Constitution, civil liberties and civil rights,<br />
the U.S. judicial system and how citizens interact with it. (HU/SS) Prerequisites:<br />
COM 1101.<br />
HUM 2480 INTRODUCTION TO POLITICAL SCIENCE (3 credits). Introduces<br />
students to the theories and concepts <strong>of</strong> political science. Emphasizes examining<br />
the interaction between ideas, values and institutions in contemporary U.S. political<br />
culture. (SS)<br />
HUM 2510 LOGIC (3 credits). Deals mainly with deductive logic, although all<br />
the fallacies <strong>of</strong> reasoning are examined in both an informal and a formal context.<br />
Brings out the role <strong>of</strong> logic in science and law, as well as ways <strong>of</strong> making formal<br />
pro<strong>of</strong>s <strong>of</strong> validity. (HU) Prerequisites: COM 1101.<br />
HUM 2570 BIOETHICS (3 credits). Studies ethical questions raised by<br />
20th century technology as they affect medicine, ecology and social issues. (HU)<br />
HUM 3026 THE CIVILIZATION OF ISLAM (3 credits). Focuses on some <strong>of</strong> the<br />
achievements <strong>of</strong> Islam from 7th-century Arabic, to medieval Spain and India, to<br />
the 20th century. Uses documents from literature, theology, architecture, science<br />
and the contemporary media. (HU) Prerequisites: HUM 2051.<br />
HUM 3027 HISTORY AND CULTURE OF CHINA (3 credits). Surveys the principal<br />
themes and developments in Chinese civilization from prehistoric times to the 21st<br />
century. Introduces China’s culture, history and geography. (Requirements: Listed<br />
prerequisite and one additional humanities course from the humanities core course<br />

HUM 3085 SPECIAL TOPICS IN HUMANITIES (3 credits). Offers interdisciplinary<br />
study <strong>of</strong> a particular period, movement, genre or individual that embraces<br />

HUM 3150 MASTERWORKS OF MUSIC (3 credits). Works <strong>of</strong> master composers<br />
in the various stylistic periods, 1600 to the present: Bach and Handel; Mozart and<br />
Haydn; Beethoven; the 19th century and early 20th centuries. (HU) Prerequisites:<br />
HUM 2051.<br />
HUM 3185 SPECIAL TOPICS IN FINE ARTS (3 credits). Studies a particular<br />
period, movement or individual artist or composer. Topics announced prior to registration.<br />

HUM 3230 SHAKESPEARE AND HIS CONTEMPORARIES (3 credits). Explores<br />
the development <strong>of</strong> English theater during the reign <strong>of</strong> Queen Elizabeth I and<br />
King James I. Students read representative plays by Shakespeare and his contemporaries.<br />

HUM 3275 CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE (3 credits). Studies literature since<br />
the 1960s. May include short stories, plays, poems and novels by McGuane, Davies,<br />
Percy, Fowles, Pinter, Beckett and Morrison. The syllabus varies considerably from<br />
semester to semester. (HU) Prerequisites: HUM 2051.<br />
HUM 3276 SCIENCE FICTION LITERATURE AND FILM (3 credits). Surveys<br />
the history <strong>of</strong> science fiction literature and film from the 19th century to the<br />
present. Emphasizes the history <strong>of</strong> technology and industrial design. Topics range<br />
from robots and dystopias to time travel and social engineering. (Requirements:<br />
Listed prerequisites and one additional humanities course from the humanities<br />

HUM 3280 NARRATIVE FILM (3 credits). Examines the structures and techniques<br />
that narrative films use to communicate ideas. Students examine films<br />
from various genres, <strong>of</strong> different types and from all periods <strong>of</strong> film history. (HU)<br />

HUM 3285 SPECIAL TOPICS IN LITERATURE (3 credits). Studies a particular<br />
author, a group <strong>of</strong> authors, a historical literary movement or a literary theme<br />

HUM 3333 AMERICAN MILITARY HISTORY (3 credits). Studies American military<br />
from the Revolutionary War to the 21st century. Emphasizes the national military<br />
establishment and its relationship to society. Surveys major conflicts, the evolution <strong>of</strong><br />
war strategies and weapons, the nature <strong>of</strong> combat and its impact, and changing attitudes<br />
and perceptions toward the armed forces and military service. (Requirements:<br />

HUM 3343 WORLD WAR II HISTORY IN FILM (3 credits). Examines World War<br />
II through film. Focuses on the impact <strong>of</strong> war. Looks at how Hollywood, Europe<br />
and Asia treat political and economic concerns, as well as the recurring theme <strong>of</strong><br />
warfare and its effect on human lives. Also discusses the role <strong>of</strong> political propaganda,<br />
governmental responses to the demands <strong>of</strong> war, and its economic effects.<br />

HUM 3351 HISTORY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY: ANCIENT AND<br />
MEDIEVAL (3 credits). Surveys the origins <strong>of</strong> science in antiquity and the Middle<br />
Ages. Includes development <strong>of</strong> mathematical, physical and biological thought in<br />
the ancient and medieval period, and the relationship between science, technology<br />
and religion. (HU/SS) Prerequisites: HUM 2051.<br />
HUM 3352 HISTORY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY: RENAISSANCE TO<br />
PRESENT (3 credits). Surveys the principal developments in science, mathematics<br />
and technology from the Renaissance to the present. Includes scientific revolution,<br />
development <strong>of</strong> modern biology and the relationship between technology and<br />
science. (HU/SS) Prerequisites: HUM 2051.<br />
HUM 3385 SPECIAL TOPICS IN HISTORY (3 credits). Offers an opportunity for<br />
in-depth analysis <strong>of</strong> a historical problem or event. Includes a wide range <strong>of</strong> possibilities.<br />

HUM 3401 CONSTITUTIONAL LAW 1 (3 credits). Surveys the evolution <strong>of</strong> U.S.<br />
constitutional law. Emphasizes the development <strong>of</strong> the U.S. Supreme Court. Uses<br />
important legal cases to determine how power is distributed between the national<br />
and state governments. (HU/SS) Prerequisites: HUM 2051.<br />
HUM 3402 CONSTITUTIONAL LAW 2 (3 credits). Continues HUM 3401.<br />
Includes in-depth study <strong>of</strong> the distribution <strong>of</strong> power between individuals and government<br />
through review <strong>of</strong> important legal cases dealing primarily with civil liberties<br />

HUM 3485 SPECIAL TOPICS IN SOCIAL SCIENCE (3 credits). Studies a particular<br />
social group or institution, social process or social change. Topics announced<br />

HUM 3521 WORLD RELIGIONS (3 credits). Introduces religion and examines<br />
the philosophy <strong>of</strong> religion. Religion is seen as humanity’s attempt to grapple with<br />
the question <strong>of</strong> the meaning <strong>of</strong> life, the forms that religious perspectives have taken<br />
and the universal aspects <strong>of</strong> human existence. (HU) Prerequisites: HUM 2051.<br />
HUM 3551 SURVEY OF ANCIENT AND MEDIEVAL PHILOSOPHY (3 credits).<br />
Surveys the history <strong>of</strong> philosophy from its beginnings with the pre-Socratic Greeks<br />
up through its influence on Christian scholasticism in the Middle Ages. Covers<br />
the sweep <strong>of</strong> intellectual history from Thales to Thomas. (HU) Prerequisites:<br />

HUM 3552 SURVEY OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY PHILOSOPHY<br />
(3 credits). Surveys philosophy beginning with the Renaissance rise <strong>of</strong> science.<br />
Follows rationalism and empiricism, the philosophies <strong>of</strong> Kant, Hegel and Marx,<br />
and concludes with two main movements <strong>of</strong> the 20th century: analytic philosophy<br />
