HUMAN-CENTERED DESIGN<br />
HCD 6810 LIFE-CRITICAL SYSTEMS (3 credits). Requires students to develop<br />
and evaluate a synthesis <strong>of</strong> life-critical systems (LCS) illustrated by space systems,<br />
aeronautics, nuclear energy systems and various emergency systems. Improves<br />
knowledge and skills <strong>of</strong> the differences between technology-centered and humancentered<br />
design <strong>of</strong> LCS.<br />
HCD 6820 ADVANCED INTERACTION MEDIA (3 credits). Discusses advanced<br />
interaction media. Covers the history <strong>of</strong> interactive technology to the present, input<br />
techniques, ubiquitous computing, tangible interaction, design tools and methods,<br />
computer-supported cooperative work, user experience and usability engineering,<br />
information visualization and multimodal interaction.<br />
HCD 6830 COGNITIVE ENGINEERING AND HUMAN-CENTERED DESIGN<br />
OF LIFE-CRITICAL SYSTEMS (3 credits). Discusses cognitive engineering and<br />
human-centered design <strong>of</strong> life-critical systems. Covers human-centered automation,<br />
human reliability and safety, risk-taking and management, cognitive modeling<br />
and cognitive function analysis, situation awareness, decision-making, use cases,<br />
scenario-based design and product integration.<br />
HCD 6840 COMPLEXITY ANALYSIS FOR HUMAN-CENTERED DESIGN<br />
(3 credits). Discusses complexity analysis from various points <strong>of</strong> view to the benefit<br />
<strong>of</strong> human-centered design. Covers how large numbers <strong>of</strong> relatively simple entities<br />
organize themselves without any central controller acting collectively to create patterns,<br />
use information, or adapt and learn.<br />
HCD 6850 ORGANIZATION DESIGN AND MANAGEMENT FOR HUMAN-<br />
CENTERED DESIGN (3 credits). Discusses current topics and history <strong>of</strong> job and<br />
organizational design. Introduces socio-technical system design and its developments<br />
on the relationship between organization and technology. Covers organizational<br />
automation, product integration in a large organization, socio-technical<br />
leadership and change management.<br />
HCD 6860 MODELING AND SIMULATION (3 credits). Discusses and practices<br />
modeling and simulation (M&S) for human-centered design. Includes familiarization<br />
to use CATIA and DELMIA, and design <strong>of</strong> a small, dynamic interactive<br />
system. Also includes life-cycle product management, discrete event simulations,<br />
mathematical models for simulation and multi-agent simulations.<br />
HCD 6899 FINAL SEMESTER DISSERTATION (0-2 credits). Variable registration<br />
for dissertation completion after satisfaction <strong>of</strong> minimum registration requirements.<br />
(Requirements: Accepted candidacy and approval by Office <strong>of</strong> Graduate Programs.)<br />
HCD 6999 DISSERTATION (3-12 credits). Research and preparation for the doctoral<br />
dissertation. (Requirement: Admission to candidacy for the doctoral program.)<br />
HUMANITIES<br />
HUM 1000 POPULAR CULTURE FOR FRESHMEN (3 credits). Examines contemporary<br />
issues and themes in popular culture. Cannot be used to fulfill undergraduate<br />
core requirements. (Requirement: Freshman status.) (HU)<br />
HUM 1010 CREATIVE ARTS PRACTICUM (1 credit). Provides students with an<br />
opportunity to earn credit for performances and productions in the creative arts<br />
under the direction <strong>of</strong> a member <strong>of</strong> the humanities faculty. Areas may include the<br />
fine arts, music, theater arts and creative writing. Can be repeated for a total <strong>of</strong> four<br />
credits. May not be used to satisfy humanities elective requirement. (Requirement:<br />
Instructor approval.)<br />
HUM 1011 FUNDAMENTALS OF COLOR 1 (1 credit). Reviews physical, perceptual<br />
and artistic theories <strong>of</strong> color. Explores practical applications and expressive<br />
uses <strong>of</strong> color. Applies the understanding <strong>of</strong> color principles to problem solving in<br />
the student’s major area, including business, computer science, psychology, science,<br />
engineering, art, aviation and education. (LA)<br />
HUM 1012 FUNDAMENTALS OF COLOR 2 (1 credit). Continues the review <strong>of</strong><br />
physical, perceptual and artistic theories <strong>of</strong> color begun in HUM 1011. Explores<br />
practical applications and expressive uses <strong>of</strong> color. Applies the understanding <strong>of</strong><br />
color principles to problem solving in the student’s major area. (LA) Prerequisites:<br />
HUM 1011.<br />
HUM 1015 MYTHOLOGY (3 credits). Introduces classical, Norse and medieval<br />
mythology through the study <strong>of</strong> themes and narratives that emphasize the importance<br />
<strong>of</strong> mythical elements to the modern world. (HU)<br />
HUM 1020 ART APPRECIATION (3 credits). Presents basic terms, theories and<br />
techniques <strong>of</strong> the artist, and major art movements and media in the visual arts.<br />
Increases understanding and aesthetic pleasure, and develops understanding <strong>of</strong><br />
the techniques and terminology in the visual arts. (HU) (Requirement: Must be<br />

HUM 1021 INTEGRATED ARTS (3 credits). Introduces visual, written and musical<br />
works <strong>of</strong> art to increase understanding. Develops techniques and terminology in<br />

HUM 1023 PHILOSOPHY OF HUMAN NATURE (3 credits). Traces the human<br />
pursuit <strong>of</strong> self-knowledge from ancient Greece to the present. Explores such fundamental<br />
philosophical questions as: How can we think clearly without prejudice;<br />
is life intrinsically valuable; can science explain everything; and why do we exist.<br />

HUM 1024 RELIGIONS OF THE WORLD 1: WESTERN RELIGIONS (3 credits).<br />
Studies western religions. Includes religions <strong>of</strong> nonliterate societies and ancient<br />

HUM 1025 RELIGIONS OF THE WORLD 2: EASTERN RELIGIONS (3 credits).<br />
Studies eastern religions. Includes Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism<br />

HUM 1150 FUNDAMENTALS OF MUSIC (3 credits). Introduces music notation<br />
and structure. Includes basic elements <strong>of</strong> music composition, clefs, pitch and<br />
rhythm reading and counting, major and minor scales and keys, simple intervals,<br />
chords and melody writing. (HU)<br />
HUM 1540 ETHICS (3 credits). Explores ethical theories in the context <strong>of</strong> contemporary<br />
moral problems. Topics may include abortion, euthanasia, capital punishment<br />
and torture. (HU)<br />
HUM 2051 CIVILIZATION 1: ANCIENT THROUGH MEDIEVAL (3 credits).<br />
Introduces civilization from its early development to the European Renaissance.<br />
Emphasizes the interpretation <strong>of</strong> primary texts that reflect the intellectual and historical<br />
changes in society. The first <strong>of</strong> two interdisciplinary courses. Prerequisites:<br />
COM 1102.<br />
HUM 2052 CIVILIZATION 2: RENAISSANCE THROUGH MODERN<br />
(3 credits). Similar in purpose and method to HUM 2051, continues the interpretation<br />
<strong>of</strong> primary texts, emphasizing the Renaissance period, the Enlightenment,<br />
Romanticism and the Modern Age. Prerequisites: COM 1102.<br />
HUM 2085 CRITICAL APPROACHES TO HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL<br />
SCIENCES (3 credits). Examines issues in the humanities and the social sciences.<br />
Improves students’ critical thinking and writing abilities. Topics announced prior<br />
to registration. (HU/SS) Prerequisites: COM 1101.<br />
HUM 2140 WORLD ARCHITECTURE (3 credits). Surveys some <strong>of</strong> the most<br />
significant architectural works from pre-history to the present from an ethnically<br />
and socially diverse perspective. Includes design, construction methods, effects <strong>of</strong><br />
technology, purpose and function, as well as basic methods <strong>of</strong> analysis and interpretation.<br />

HUM 2141 WORLD ART HISTORY 1: PRE-HISTORY TO EARLY GLOBAL<br />
AWARENESS (3 credits). Surveys world art history and methodology from prehistory<br />
to circa 1500. Emphasizes analyzing and understanding works <strong>of</strong> painting,<br />
sculpture, textiles and decorative arts in their respective historical and cultural<br />
contexts. (HU/SS) Prerequisites: COM 1102.<br />
HUM 2142 WORLD ART HISTORY 2: EARLY MODERN TO POST-COLONIAL<br />
(3 credits). Surveys world art history and methodology from circa 1500 to present day.<br />
Emphasizes analyzing and understanding works <strong>of</strong> painting, sculpture, photography,<br />
textiles, decorative arts, alternative art forms and new media in their respective historical<br />
and cultural contexts. (HU/SS) Prerequisites: COM 1102.<br />
HUM 2153 POPULAR MUSIC AND CULTURE (3 credits). Introduces the<br />
grammar <strong>of</strong> Western music through music theory. Teaches skills in pitch and<br />
rhythm notation, and the fundamentals <strong>of</strong> melody, harmony and time. Familiarizes<br />
students with up-to-date notation and counterpoint s<strong>of</strong>tware. (Requirement: Must<br />

HUM 2212 BRITISH AND AMERICAN LITERATURE 1 (3 credits). Surveys<br />
British and American literature <strong>of</strong> the late 18th to early 20th century, from the<br />
French Revolution to World War I. Emphasizes the interpretation <strong>of</strong> texts that<br />
reflect changing ideas about individual and national identities during revolutionary<br />
times. Prerequisites: COM 1102.<br />
HUM 2213 BRITISH AND AMERICAN LITERATURE 2 (3 credits). Surveys<br />
British and American literature in the 20th and 21st centuries, from World War I to<br />
the present. Emphasizes the interpretation <strong>of</strong> texts that represent the development<br />
<strong>of</strong> the modern world and modern selves. Prerequisites: COM 1102.
